Corrections in the Community, Sixth Edition, examines the current state of community corrections and proposes an evidence-based approach to making programs more effective. As the U.S. prison system approaches meltdown, options like probation, parole, alternative sentencing, and both residential and non-residential programs in the community continue to grow in importance. This text provides a solid foundation and includes the most salient information available on the broad and dynamic subject of community corrections. Authors Latessa and Smith organize and evaluate the latest data on the assessment of offender risk/need/responsivity and successful methods that continue to improve community supervision and its effects on different types of clients, from the mentally ill to juveniles. This book provides students with a thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of community corrections and prepares them to evaluate and strengthen these crucial programs. This sixth edition includes a new chapter on specialty drug and other problem-solving courts. Now found in every state, these specialty courts represent a new way to deal with some of the problems that face our citizens, be it substance abuse or reentry to the community from prison. Chapters contain key terms, boxed material, review questions, and recommended readings, and a glossary is provided to clarify important concepts.

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. The highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestselling novel The Rosie Project, starring the same extraordinary couple now living in New York and unexpectedly expecting their first child. Get ready to fall in love all over again. Don Tillman and Rosie Jarman are back. The Wife Project is complete, and Don and Rosie are happily married and living in New York. But they're about to face a new challenge because-- surprise!--Rosie is pregnant. Don sets about learning the protocols of becoming a father, but his unusual research style gets him into trouble with the law. Fortunately his best friend Gene is on hand to offer advice: he's left Claudia and moved in with Don and Rosie. As Don tries to schedule time for pregnancy research, getting Gene and Claudia to reconcile, servicing the industrial refrigeration unit that occupies half his apartment, helping Dave the Baseball Fan save his business, and staying on the right side of Lydia the social worker, he almost misses the biggest problem of all: he might lose Rosie when she needs him the most. Graeme Simsion first introduced these unforgettable characters in The Rosie Project, which NPR called ""sparkling entertainment along the lines of Where'd You Go Bernadette and When Harry Met Sally."" The San Francisco Chronicle said, ""sometimes you just need a smart love story that will make anyone, man or woman, laugh out loud."" If you were swept away by the book that's captivated a million readers worldwide, you will love The Rosie Effect.

Since the appearance of the John O'Keefe and Lynn Nadel book in which they proposed that the hippocampus provides an abstract, internal representation of the animal's environment, considerable conceptual progress in the area of navigational information processing has been achieved. The purpose of the current work is to consolidate recent data and conceptual insights related to navigational insight processing in a format useful to both practitioners and advanced students in neuroscience.

This book deals with the way that the auditory system processes acoustic signals. Since the first edition appeared, rapid and exciting developments have been made in several areas which bear on this theme, most notably in the understanding of cochlear function, including cochlear mechanics, hair cell function and mechanisms of transduction. The sections of the book dealing with these areas have been completely rewritten. Every chapter has been completely revised in the light of developments in the field. A reading scheme has been provided to guide readers to the sections most appropriate for their interest. The book is written at a level suitable for undergraduates studying the special senses or as a basis for a range of more advanced studies.

The presentation of visual information is critical to almost every endeavor in modern technology, from space exploration and military surveillance to diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. The technology of presenting visual information has developed rapidly in recent years; images and data can now be presented in a wide variety of formats and processed to bring out any of an enormous variety of aspects. The challenge is to display the information in such a way that the human observer can use it best. To do so requires understanding how humans process and use information that reaches them through the eye. While the elementary processes are well known, the details are far from clear. This text, comprising a dozen contributions by well-known researchers in the field, examines first what is currently known or understood about human vision and the information processing that it involves; it then considers the implications for image manipulation and presentation, particularly for computer processing of data to be presented visually.

The auditory system presents many features of a complex computational environment, as well as providing numerous opportunities for computational analysis. This volume represents an overview of computational approaches to understanding auditory system function. The chapters share the common perspective that complex information processing must be understood at multiple levels; that disciplines such as neurobiology, psychophysics, and computer science make vital contributions; and that the end product of computational analysis should be the development of formal models.

A book such as this one necessarily entails the effort of many individuals. Its first seed was a workshop in 1988 that one of us (K. L. C. ) designed and directed at the City University of New York Graduate Center as part of a series of conferences and workshops on topics in neuropsychology spon sored by the Institute for Research in Behavioral Neuroscience (IRBN). At that time, studies in the efficacy of olfaction as an alternative modality of stimulation in brain-injured adults were taking place at IRBN. The work shop helped to spark many new ideas among IRBN's staff, leading to various projects in clinical intervention, some of which are discussed in this volume. We soon discovered that clinical interest in olfaction was steadily increasing, and that this modality was in many ways on a par with the rest. Along with progress in the clinical investigation of olfaction, an abundance of work has been published in the basic science of the field. Ideas such as the regeneration of olfactory neurons and the use of these neurons in trans plantation took hold and were proved to be viable ones. These develop ments along with a profusion of techniques that allow a closer look at the anatomy and physiology of olfaction, have contributed to the accelerated pace with which this field is now advancing.
