The Jacobi group is a semidirect product of a symplectic group with a Heisenberg group. It is an important example for a non-reductive group and sets the frame within which to treat theta functions as well as elliptic functions - in particular, the universal elliptic curve. This text gathers for the first time material from the representation theory of this group in both local (archimedean and non-archimedean) cases and in the global number field case. Via a bridge to Waldspurger's theory for the metaplectic group, complete classification theorems for irreducible representations are obtained. Further topics include differential operators, Whittaker models, Hecke operators, spherical representations and theta functions. The global theory is aimed at the correspondence between automorphic representations and Jacobi forms. This volume is thus a complement to the seminal book on Jacobi forms by M. Eichler and D. Zagier. Incorporating results of the authors' original research, this exposition is meant for researchers and graduate students interested in algebraic groups and number theory, in particular, modular and automorphic forms.

Written by one of the world's leading algebraic topologists, this book introduces new techniques from topology into algebra, addressing several topics in algebra which are unified by their connection with the representation theory of Galois groups. Treatment is self-contained, addressing bilinear forms and local root numbers using techniques from cohomology theory, homotopy, and stable homotopy theory. Snaith's innovative approach is likely to inspire many similar applications of the explicit Brauer induction theory. Contains much original research of interest to algebraic topologists, number theorists, and group theorists.

The idea of writing this book appeared when I was working on some problems related to representations of physically relevant infinite - mensional groups of operators on physically relevant Hilbert spaces. The considerations were local, reducing the subject to dealing with representations of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras associated with the associated groups. There is a large number of specialized articles and books on parts of this subject, but to our suprise only a few represent the point of view given in this book. Moreover, none of the written material was self-contained. At present, the subject has not reached its final form and active research is still being undertaken. I present this subject of growing importance in a unified manner and by a fairly simple approach. I present a route by which students can absorb and understand the subject, only assuming that the reader is familliar with functional analysis, especially bounded and unbounded operators on Hilbert spaces. Moreover, I assume a little basic knowledge of algebras , Lie algebras, Lie groups, and manifolds- at least the definitions. The contents are presented in detail in the introduction in Chap. The manuscript of this book has been succesfully used by some advanced graduate students at Aarhus University, Denmark, in their "A-exame'. I thank them for comments.

This volume Studies in Memory of Issai Schur was conceived as a tribute to Schur's of his tragic end. His impact on great contributions to mathematics and in remembrance of mathematicians Representation Theory alone was so great that a significant number of Researchers (TMR) Network, in the European Community Training and Mobility Orbits, Crystals and Representation Theory, in operation during the period (1997-2002) have been occupied with what has been called Schur theory. Consequently, this volume has the additional purpose of recording some of the significant results of the network. It was furthermore appropriate that invited contributors should be amongst the speakers at the Paris Midterm Workshop of the network held at Chevaleret during 21-25 May, 2000 as well as those of the Schur Memoriam Workshop held at the Weizmann Institute, Rehovot, during 27-31 December 2000. The latter marked the sixtieth anniversary of Schur's passing and took place in the 125th year of his birth.

This work is concerned with combinatorial aspects arising in the theory of exactly solvable models and representation theory. Recent developments in integrable models reveal an unexpected link between representation theory and statistical mechanics through combinatorics. For example, Young tableaux, which describe the basis of irreducible representations, appear in the Bethe Ansatz method in quantum spin chains as labels for the eigenstates for Hamiltonians. Taking into account the various criss-crossing among mathematical subject, Physical Combinatorics presents new results and exciting ideas from three viewpoints; representation theory, integrable models, and combinatorics. This volume will be of interest to mathematical physicists and graduate students in the the above-mentioned fields. Contributors to the volume: T.H. Baker, O. Foda, G. Hatayama, Y. Komori, A. This book provides a treatment of the theory of quantum groups (quantized universal enveloping algebras and quantized algebras of functions) and q-deformed algebras (q-oscillator algebras), their representations and corepresentations, and noncommutative differential calculus. The theory of the simplest and most important quantum groups and their representations is presented in detail. A number of topics and results from the more advanced general theory are developed and discussed. Many applications in mathematical and theoretical physics are indicated. The book starts as an introduction for the beginner and continues at a textbook level for graduate students in physics and in mathematics. It may serve as a reference for more advanced readers.

"The book is largely self-contained...There is a nice introduction to symplectic geometry and a charming exposition of equivariant K-theory. Both are enlivened by examples related to groups...An attractive feature is the attempt to convey some informal ‘wisdom’ rather than only the precise definitions. As a number of results [are] due to the authors, one finds some of the original excitement. This is the only available introduction to geometric representation theory...it has already proved successful in introducing a new generation to the subject." (Bulletin of the AMS)

Designed as an introduction to harmonic analysis and group representations, this book covers a wide range of topics rather than delving deeply into any particular one. In the words of H. Weyl "...it is primarily meant for the humble, who want to learn as new the things set forth therein, rather than for the proud and learned who are already familiar with the subject and merely look for quick and exact information..." . The main objective is to introduce the reader to concepts, ideas, results and techniques that evolve around symmetry-groups, representations and Laplacians . More specifically, the main interest concerns geometrical objects and structures { X }, discrete or continuous, that possess sufficiently large symmetry group G , such as regular graphs (Platonic solids), lattices, and symmetric Riemannian manifolds. All such objects have a natural Laplacian Delta , a linear operator on functions over X , invariant under the group action. There are many problems associated with Laplacians on X , such as continuous or discrete-time evolutions, on X , random walks, diffusion processes, and wave-propagation. This book contains sufficient material for a 1 or 2-semester course.

Now back in print by the AMS, this is a significantly revised edition of a book originally published in 1987 by Academic Press. This book gives the reader an introduction to the theory of algebraic representations of reductive algebraic groups. To develop appropriate techniques, the first part of the book is an introduction to the general theory of representations of algebraic group schemes. Here, the author describes important basic notions: induction functors, cohomology, quotients, Frobenius kernels, and reduction mod $p$, among others. The second part of the book is devoted to the representation theory of reductive algebraic groups. It includes topics such as the description of simple modules, vanishing theorems, the Borel-Bott-Weil theorem and Weyl's character formula, and Schubert schemes and line bundles on them. For this revised edition the author added nearly 150 pages of new material describing some later developments, among them Schur algebras, Lusztig's conjecture and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, tilting modules, and representations of quantum groups. He also made major revisions to parts of the old text. Jantzen's book continues to be the ultimate source of information on representations of algebraic groups in finite characteristics. It is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in algebraic groups and their representations.
