Through the efforts of increasingly media-aware NGOs, people in rich nations are bombarded with images of poverty and suffering. Representations of Global Poverty is the first comprehensive study of the communications and imagery used by international NGOs to represent the global South. In this meticulously researched and original book, Nandita Dogra examines a full cycle of representation – integrating analyses of an annual cycle of fundraising and advocacy messages of international development NGOs in the UK with the views of their staff and audiences. Exploring NGO messages across the discourses of charity, justice, humanism, cosmopolitanism, colonialism and Eurocentrism, she argues for a greater acknowledgement of NGOs as significant mediating institutions which can expand understandings of global inequalities. The book is a timely addition to the growing fields of development, media and postcolonial studies and will be a key resource for academics, policymakers and practitioners alike who have an interest in global poverty, aid, NGOs, and the politics of representation.

One of the most pressing issues confronting the multilateral trade system is the challenge posed by the rapid proliferation of preferential trade agreements. Plenty has been written about why governments might choose to negotiate preferentially or multilaterally, but until now it has been written almost exclusively from the perspective of governments. We know very little about how non-state actors view this issue of 'forum choice', nor how they position themselves to influence choices by governments about whether to emphasize PTAs or the WTO. This book addresses that issue squarely through case studies of trade policy-making and forum choice in eight developing countries: Chile, Colombia, Mexico, South Africa, Kenya, Jordan, Indonesia and Thailand. The case studies are based on original research by the authors, including interviews with state and non-state actors involved in the trade policy-making process in the eight countries of this study.

In the search for institutional models that can deliver more and better development outcomes, partnership is arguably among the most popular solutions proposed. But the evidence of partnerships' contributions to actual performance has been for the most part anecdotal. Partnerships for International Development bridges the gap between rhetoric and practice, clarifying what the concept means - and providing a roadmap for how to achieve meaningful partnership results. The discussion is enhanced by case studies of partnerships for public service, corporate social responsibility, and conflict resolution.
