Integrating Virtual and Traditional Learning in 6-12 Classrooms introduces a model of "layered literacies" as a framework for describing and illustrating how students’ digital experiences can inform educational methods. Through the lens of layered literacies, educators can envision opportunities to draw upon adolescents’ out-of-school interests and activities to meaningfully integrate digital practices within academic contexts. Such an approach facilitates innovative teaching, inspired learning, and successful pedagogy, and it thoughtfully highlights the role of technology within mandated standards-based instruction in public schools. Combining foundational and contemporary theories, supported by data from multiple studies of adolescent learning, and honoring teachers’ and students’ experiences and resources, this text helps educators reconceptualize the ways students learn through and with digital texts and negotiate the connection between online and offline spaces. A companion website extends the discussion onto the screen, engaging readers in an intertextual approach to learning that complements the concept of layering literacies across disciplines. With a foreword by Jennifer Rowsell and an afterword by Bill Cope and Mary Kalantzis, it will be of interest to experienced educators and administrators, as well as postgraduate, graduate, and undergraduate students of education.

Is there life after death for secondary education? This book focuses upon the quality of learning. ‘Reform’, so called, too often begins with qualifications, examinations, institutional provision, paths of progression. All those are very important, but their value lies in the support they give to learners and their learning in its different forms. One needs to start with the aims of education and then with what it means to learn (practically, theoretically, morally) and with the very many different needs of the learners. That is what this book aims to do. In so doing, it will be both philosophical in analysis and empirical in example. So much is happening ‘from down below’ that goes unrecognised by policy makers. But innovations too often get hampered by government interventions, by a bureaucratic mentality and by failure to spread good practice. The general argument of the book, therefore, will be illustrated throughout with detailed references to practical developments in schools, colleges, the third sector, youth work, independent training providers and professional bodies – across several countries. The book builds on Education for All, which was based on 14-19 research into secondary education, this book transcends the particularities of England and Wales and digs more deeply into those issues which are at the heart of educational controversy, policy and practices and which survive the transience of political change and controversy. The issues (the aims of education, standards of performance, the consequent vision of learning, the role of teachers, progression from school to higher or further education and into employment, the provision of such education and training and the control of education) are by no means confined to the UK, or to this day and age. Pring identifies similar problems in other countries such as the USA, Germany and France – and indeed in the Greece of Plato and Aristotle and offers solutions with a comparative perspective. It is a critical time. Old patterns of education and its provision are less and less suitable for facing the twenty-first century. The patterns and modes of communication have changed radically in a few years and those changes are quickening in pace. The economic context has been transformed, affecting the skills and knowledge needed for employment. The social world of young people raises fresh demands, hopes and fears. A global recession has affected young people disproportionately making quality of life and self-fulfilment ever more difficult to attain. In addressing ‘learning’ and the ‘learners’ first and foremost, the book will argue for a wider vision of learning and a more varied pattern of provision. Old structures must give way to new.

What is the role of the individual school 'subject' and 'subject teacher' within school? Is it to teach a set of core subject knowledge, skills and understanding in a way that remains faithful to long-standing subject cultures and pedagogies? Or is there another way to consider how the curriculum and the notion of individual subjects and teachers' pedagogy could be constructed? Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School ... English brings together ongoing debates about personalised learning, creativity and ICT in education to establish a clear theoretical framework for cross-curricular teaching and learning in English and literacy. Presenting an appropriate pedagogy for cross-curricular teaching that draws on this framework, it promotes radical new approaches to English teaching as part of a widened curriculum through practical examples and theoretical discussions, blended with engaging stories of current practice. With links to other curriculum subjects and current education policy, features include: theoretical examination of key issues; assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of different curricular models; clear principles for effective assessment; a wide range of case studies; summaries of key research linked to suggestions for further reading; professional development activities to promote cross-curricular dialogue. Part of the Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School series, this timely, interdisciplinary textbook is essential reading for all students on Initial Teacher Training courses and practising teachers looking to holistically introduce cross-curricular themes and practices in secondary English teaching.

What is the role of the individual school 'subject' and 'subject teacher' within school? Is it to teach a set of core subject knowledge, skills and understanding in way that remains faithful to long-standing subject cultures and pedagogies? Or is there another way to consider how the curriculum, and the notion of individual subjects and teachers' pedagogy, could be constructed. Working from the key principle that there is no curriculum development without teacher development, Cross-Curricular Teaching and Learning in the Secondary School argues for a new, skilful pedagogy which embeds an authentic, cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning in the work of the individual teacher. This approach respects and builds on individual subject cultures, embracing and exploring links between subject knowledge and subject pedagogies in an enriching way. Drawing on examples and case studies taken from innovative practices in different schools and subject areas, as well as summarising lessons from key pieces of research evidence this book includes: Clear theoretical frameworks for cross-curricular processes of teaching and learning A lively account of key issues blended with engaging stories of current practice An analysis of the use of language, ICT and assessment as key components of a skilful pedagogical practice that affects how teaching is delivered and how pupils learn in cross-curricular contexts Practical tasks and questions for reflective practice This timely textbook is essential reading for all students on Initial Teacher Training courses and PGCE courses as well as practising teachers looking to holistically introduce cross-curricular themes and practices in their own subjects.
