At two o’clock on May morning a fishing-boat, with a small row-boat in tow, stole up the harbour between the lights of the vessels that lay at anchor. She came on a soundless tide, with her sprit-mainsail wide and drawing, and her foresail flapping idle; and although her cuddy-top and gunwale glistened wet with a recent shower, the man who steered her looked over his shoulder at the waning moon, and decided that the dawn would be a fine one.

My dear William A rcher, Severe and ruthlessly honest man that you are, you will find that the levities and the gravities of this book do not accord, and will say so. I plead only that they were written at intervals, and in part for recreation, during years in which their author has striven to maintain a cheerful mind while a popular philosophy which he believed to be cheap took possession of men and translated itself into politics which he knew to be nasty. I may summarise it, in its own jargon, as the philosophy of the Superman, and succinctly describe it as an attempt to stretch a part of the Darwinian hypothesis and make it cover the whole of mans life and conduct.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Arthur Quiller-Couch was a Cornish writer who often published under the pseudonym Q. "Oxford Book of English Verse 1250-1900" was his most famous work. His stories have a wide range of subjects from Viking tales, satires, historical fiction, romantic adventures, tales of heroic swashbuckling, mystery and crime fiction, and sea-going adventures. The Astonishing History of Troy Town reads like a series of humorous sketches. The Table of Contents includes In which the reader is made acquainted with a state of innocence; and the meaning of the word "cumeelfo", How an admiral took one gentleman for another, and was told the day of the month, Of a blue-jerseyed man that would hoist no more bricks; and a nightcap that had no business to be where it was, Of certain lepers; and two brothers who, being much alike, loved their sister and recommended the use of globes, How an absent-minded man, that hated women, took a house by the waterside and lived therein with one servant, How certain Trojans climbed a wall out of curiosity; and of a charwoman that could give no information, Of a lady that had a musical voice, but used it to deceive, How a crew, that would sail on a washing-day, was shipwrecked: with an advertisement against women, Of a town that would laugh at the great: and how a dull company was cured by an Irish song, Of one excursion and many alarums, Of a Wesleyan minister that would improve upon nature, and thereby trained a rook to good principles, Of deterioration; and a wheelbarrow that contained unexpected things, and more.

It is now ten years and more from the end of that summer term when we shook hands at the railway station, and went east and west with swelling hearts ;and since then no report has come of you. In the meantime you may have died, or grown rich and esteemed ;but that you have remained the boy I knew is clearly beyond hope. You were a genius then, and wrote epic poetry. I assume that you have found it worth while to discontinue that habit, for I never see your name among the publishers announcements. But you! poetry used to be magnificent when you recited it in the shadow of the deserted fives-court; and I believe you spoke sincerely when you assured me that my stories, too, were something above contempt. To the boy that was you I would dedicate a small tale, crammed with historical inaccuracy.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. SHE HAD DISHONORED THE SABBATH They had stripped her to the waist, and then for decency -- their decency! -- had thrown a jacket of coarse sacking over her, lacing it loosely in front with pack-thread. But, because their work required it, this garment had been gathered up into a rope at the neck, whence it dangled in folds over her young breast. Faith never yet has burnt man or woman at the stake. Religion has burnt its tens of thousands. This is the astonishing love story of Ruth and Oliver. From America of the mid-eighteenth century; to earthquake-ravaged Lisbon, Portugal; to England, their tormented romance flamed and burned. . . . Would his Lady Good-for-Nothing be vindicated. . . . Or suffer a shameful punishment? A lyrical and unusual novel of historical passion, originally published under the pseudonym Q by the editor of The Oxford Book of Verse, the famous poet Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch.

"I hardly can bring myself to part with this story, it has brought such private joy to me. "I had taken an afternoon's holiday to make a pilgrimage: my goal being a small parish church that lies remote from the railway, five good miles from the tiniest of country stations . . . and to carry me on my first stage I had taken a crawling local train. I will not deny that I dozed at intervals, in my empty smoking compartment . . . "But I wish to make it clear that I came on the Vision with eyes open -- and that it left me staring, and as wide-awake as Macbeth -- for here, in this green corner of rural England on a workaday afternoon, in full sunlight, I saw a company of ancient god-like beings sitting, naked and unabashed -- and piping -- to my astonishment! -- while twelve British navvies danced to their music! . . . I saw it; and a derisive whistle from the engine told me that driver and stoker saw it, too. I was not dreaming, then!" So begins a journey from everyday life of modern England -- to the realm of mystery and beauty . . . from the author of The Splendid Spur and Naughts and Crosses.
