There was once a lad, and what his real name was nobody remembered, unless it was the mother who bore him; but what every one called himwas Ashipattle. They called him that because he sat among the ashes towarm his toes.He had six older brothers, and they did not think much of him. All thetasks they scorned to do themselves they put upon Ashipattle. Hegathered the sticks for the fire, he swept the floor, he cleaned thebyre, he ran the errands, and all he got for his pains were kicks andcuffs and mocking words. Still he was a merry fellow, and as far aswords went he gave his brothers as good as they sent.Ashipattle had one sister, and she was very good and kind to him. Inreturn for her kindness he told her long stories of trolls and giantsand heroes and brave deeds, and as long as he would tell she would sitand listen. But his brothers could not stand his stories, and used tothrow clods at him to make him be quiet. They were angry becauseAshipattle was always the hero of his own stories, and in his talesthere was nothing he dared not do.Now while Ashipattle was still a lad, but a tall, stout one, a greatmisfortune fell upon the kingdom, for a Stoorworm rose up out of thesea; and of all Stoorworms it was the greatest and the worst. For thisreason it was called the Meester Stoorworm. Its length stretched halfaround the world, its one eye was as red as fire, and its breath wasso poisonous that whatever it breathed upon was withered. There was great fear and lamentation throughout the land because ofthe worm, for every day it drew nearer to the shore, and every day thedanger from it grew greater. When it was first discovered it was sofar away that its back was no more than a low, long, black line uponthe horizon, but soon it was near enough for them to see the hornsupon its back, and its scales, and its one fierce eye, and itsnostrils that breathed out and in.

THERE was once a king who had three sons, and he had also a golden apple tree, that bore nothing but golden apples, and this tree he loved as though it had been his daughter. The king was never able, however, to have any of the fruit it bore, for no sooner were the apples ripe than they would disappear in the night, and this in spite of a guard being set around the garden to watch it and see that no one entered in.

Matilda’s kind to pussy cat, It shows her gratitude for that. “I FEEL ashamed Matilda To see you such a shirk! 8 I really think you’d run a mile To get away from work.” So spoke Matilda’s mother Reprovingly one day, But Mattie only shrugged and sulked And turned her face away. Soon mother left her then alone, The door was open wide. On tip-toes Mattie crossed the floor, And gaily ran outside. She left her room undusted, She left her bed unmade, Indeed she really was a shirk I’m very much afraid.
