The tourism and leisure industries are big business. Opportunities for leisure and tourism have escalated as disposable income, technology, travel and education have become increasingly available in recent times. However, this trend has been juxtaposed with an increase in crime, particularly since the early the 1950s. Acquisitive crimes have been facilitated with the development of more portable and valuable commodities; some activities, such as drink driving and disorder, have now been socially defined as crimes and are more readily identified through new technology such as the increasing use of CCTV. The Problem of Pleasure covers them all. The purpose of this book is to inform and enlighten a range of readers, whose interests may be academic or commercial on possible crime events and modus operandi of criminals. The book has a global perspective, bringing together leading academics from the UK, the US, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand who examine several aspects of leisure that are vulnerable to crime, from illegal hunting to street racing, as well as the impact of crime upon tourists and the tourism industry. This book will be a key text for students of tourism and leisure as well as criminology and sociology; people working in the tourism and recreation industry; policy makers and the police.

Drawing on a wealth of local, national and international sources, unpublished documents and original research, this book provides a theoretical and practical critique of victimology. The authors outline and discuss the issues facing victims today and address the fundamental question: How can we best ensure justice for victims, while at the same time preserving the rights of defendants? The search for answers raises other key questions: What are the risks of crime and do they vary from country to country? What is the impact of crime on the victim? How are victims treated by police, welfare agencies and courts? Why have governments become interested in victims? Can we learn from the experiences of policies in other nations? H

The current political context tends to support voluntary work as part of an extended "mixed economy of welfare". This book sets out to remedy the academic neglect of community involvement - and its outcomes - in the criminal justice system. Focusing in detail on three groups of volunteers, those working in the probation service, the police (as special constables) and victim support schemes, it aims to illustrate different strands of the voluntary tradition. The authors draw on local, national, international and historical data, and address both the theoretical and practical issues of voluntarism. They analyze who volunteers and why they choose particular agencies and types of work; how they are received by the professionals; and how far they participate in their subculture. They also suggest in detail how volunteers could be recruited and trained more efficiently and deployed more effectively.
