Stephen Graham (1884-1975) was a British author, noted for his travel writing, though he also wrote novels. His most famous books recount his travels around pre-revolutionary Russia and his journey to Jerusalem with a group of Russian pilgrims. His works include: A Tramp's Sketches (1913), Russia and the World (1915), Through Russian Central Asia (1916), A Private in the Guards (1919), The Challenge of the Dead (1921), Tramping With a Poet (1922), Europe-Whither Bound? (1922) and In Quest of El Dorado (1923).

Cities are the new battleground of our increasingly urban world. From the slums of the global South to the wealthy financial centers of the West, Cities Under Siege traces the spread of political violence through the sites, spaces, infrastructure and symbols of the world’s rapidly expanding metropolitan areas. Urban inhabitants have become targets that need to be continually tracked, scanned and controlled. Graham examines the transformation of Western armies into high-tech urban counter-insurgency forces. He looks at the militarization and surveillance of international borders, the use of ‘security’ concerns to suppress democratic dissent, and the enacting of legislation to suspend civilian law.
