Par suite des recents progres de l'imagerie medicale, il a semble necessaired'entreprendre une etude tridimensionnelle des coupes de cerveau. Ce livre comprend donc des coupes seriees, frontales, sagittales et horizontales de 2a 4 mm d'epaisseur interessant les hemispheres cerebraux et le diencephale. De facon a preciser le niveau des coupes, chacune est vue suivant differents angles qui montrent a la fois la section elle-meme etla surface voisine des hemispheres. Cette approche tridimensionnelle est apparue particulierement utile pour comprendre l'anatomie de la section des gyrus et des sillons. Certaines structures telles que le lobe occipital,la substance grise profonde (noyaux de la base et thalamus) ainsi que l'hippocampe ont ete etudiees en detail. Chaque fois que cela a ete possible, on a compare les structures anatomiques avec des vues IRM. L'interpretaion des sections et des vues IRM ne peut etre faite sans une connaissance precise de l'anatomie du cerveau. Aussi nous avons trouve utile de debuter ce libre par une etude detaillee de la surface du cerveau a laquelle font suite des notions generales d'anatomie fonctionnelle.
