Jean André Castaigne (1860/61-1930) was a popular French painter, book illustrator and writer. He worked for many illustrated magazines that were popular at the time like The Century, Scribner’s, and Harpers. He illustrated many books including: F. Marion Crawford’s Casa Braccio (1895), S. Weir Mitchell’s The Adventures of François (1898), Harold MacGrath’s The Goose Girl (1909), Hallie Erminie Rives’ The Valiants of Virginia (1912), and was the first to illustrate Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera (1910). Castaigne also wrote a number of books which he illustrated himself such as: Fata Morgana: A Romance of Art Student Life in Paris (1904) and The Bill-Toppers (1909).
