Jean André Castaigne (1860/61-1930) was a popular French painter, book illustrator and writer. He worked for many illustrated magazines that were popular at the time like The Century, Scribnerââ¬â¢s, and Harpers. He illustrated many books including: F. Marion Crawfordââ¬â¢s Casa Braccio (1895), S. Weir Mitchellââ¬â¢s The Adventures of François (1898), Harold MacGrathââ¬â¢s The Goose Girl (1909), Hallie Erminie Rivesââ¬â¢ The Valiants of Virginia (1912), and was the first to illustrate Gaston Lerouxââ¬â¢s The Phantom of the Opera (1910). Castaigne also wrote a number of books which he illustrated himself such as: Fata Morgana: A Romance of Art Student Life in Paris (1904) and The Bill-Toppers (1909).
