The Necromancers is more than that; there is a real Augustinian terror of the void, in the absence of God comes real evil. In the book's climax, Maggie's love for Laurie, and a night of sincere prayer draw him back from the brink - a brink that practical, clear-headed, convent-raised Maggie glimpses in the form of the dark, fiery personality she confronts in the night. This personality can be none other than the Devil himself.

Paperback:

9781519594754 | Createspace Independent Pub, November 29, 2015, cover price $14.90 | About this edition: "The History of Richard Raynal" from Robert Hugh Benson.

To the casual Londoner who lounged, intolerant and impatient, at the blacksmith's door while a horse was shod, or a cracked spoke mended, Great Keynes seemed but a poor backwater of a place, compared with the rush of the Brighton road eight miles to the east from which he had turned off, or the whirling cauldron of London City, twenty miles to the north, towards which he was travelling. The triangular green, with its stocks and horse-pond, overlooked by the grey benignant church-tower, seemed a tame exchange for seething Cheapside and the crowded ways about the Temple or Whitehall; and it was strange to think that the solemn-faced rustics who stared respectfully at the gorgeous stranger were of the same human race as the quick-eyed, voluble townsmen who chattered and laughed and grimaced over the news that came up daily from the Continent or the North, and was tossed to and fro, embroidered and discredited alternately, all day long.

Frank Guiseley was a student at Cambridge when he decided to enter the priesthood. When he heard of that, his father disowned him, leaving without much more than the clothes on his back. Note even his best friend -- Jack Kirby -- could dissuade Frank from this madness. In the middle of the night, Frank left the confines of college and set off to join the clergy with only a handful of currency in his pocket. Lord Talgarth -- Frank's father -- wrote the letter to disown his son certain that it would cause his son to change his plans. Frank was supposed to have been devastated -- and returned a submissive letter stating that he would not join clergy. But that didn't happen, and Frank has run away. Lord Talgarth has grown ill with worry. Jenny Launton was Frank Guiseley's fiance. She seems unperturbed by Frank's decision and even tells her cousins that she has a plan. A clever and wonderful plan that will bring everything back together again and make everything right as rain. . . . * Robert Hugh Benson was an English author and a clergyman. He was the son of Archbishop Benson. Robert Hugh Benson eventually became a Monsignor and served as an assistant to Pope Pius X. In the course of his life, he wrote a large number of books -- children's books, science fiction, religious novels and nonfiction on religion.

In The King's Achievement, Benson tells the story of a fictitious family during the time of King Henry VIII's dissolution of English monasteries. The brothers of the Torridon family make their way in the world -- the eldest, Ralph, in service to Cromwell and the youngest, Christopher, in service to God and the Catholic church as a monk in the Priory at Lewes. Their paths carry them to completely different destinations and Ralph is instrumental in turning Christopher and his fellow monks out of their monastery. Christopher, however, manages to rise above his pride and anger and ministers to Ralph in his hour of need.

In or about the year 2000, humanity has reached "that incredibly lofty goal to which its intrinsic efforts can carry it" — but rejected everything but crass materialism. Technology has advanced to the point where no one need work for a living, while the social sciences have achieved a smoothly-running if almost unbearably sterile social order. Formal religious beliefs except for Catholicism have been uprooted and eliminated as coherent systems, and the Catholic Church has been completely discredited in the eyes of the world, finally being outlawed. The result is everything the late Victorians and Edwardians believed would bring human happiness — and which brings nothing but the advent of new superstitions, despair, and the end of the world … maybe.
