Published for the first time in 1824, this masterpiece brings together the best elements from gothic novels, intrigue and psychological character analysis. Hogg wrote this metaphysical novel so that it could be taken for a real story, and he went so far as to insert himself in the story as a secondary character. The composition is modern: the first character to make an appearance is an editor, a supposedly objective observer, soon followed by the protagonist and his memories, confessions that read as an example of the psychological examination of a murderer.
