This study constitutes a point-by-point review of central aspects of Proppian analysis. The present study was designed partially as a clarification and corrective to that 100-year-old theory. But a more in-depth analysis of the great collection of Russian stories used by Propp uncovers new narrative formulae which are incompatible with his single-structure model.
