Remittances provide a lifeline in many countries. Worldwide remittance flows are estimated to have exceeded $601 billion in 2015. Of that amount, developing countries are estimated to receive about $441 billion, more than three times the total of official aid. India was the largest remittance-receiving country, with an estimated US$72 billion in 2015, followed by China (US$64 billion), and the Philippines (US$30 billion). Remittances amounted to 42 percent of GDP in Tajikistan, and they are larger than the revenue from the Suez Canal in the Arab Republic of Egypt, and larger than the revenue from tourism in Nepal.
