There are few contemporary artists with the international recognition and reputation of Gerhard Richter. Overpainted Photographs documents a largely unknown part of Richter’s art practice: a series of overpainted photographs that he began making in the late 1980s and continues to engage with today. Beginning with photographs of landscapes from all over the world that he took on his travels, Richter then adapts them by painting over the initial image, sometimes completely concealing it beneath layers of paint. Featuring 1500 images in spectacular full color through four volumes, with an accompanying essay by renowned curator Han Ulrich Obrist, Overpainted Photographs is a landmark in the publishing of Richter’s work.
