The present text is thus deliberately little changed from the original. We have, however, hopefully corrected any errors, expanded the lists of further reading, and perhaps, most importantly, included a complete set of solutions to exercises. We hope that the revised edition continues to be enjoyed and appreciated in the many Schools of Metallurgy, Materials Science and Engineering Materials we know to be using our text throughout the world.
