Summaries and Reviews
Amazon.com description: Product Description: Working Smarter with DOS 5.0 is a comprehensive workbook and reference guide designed to prepare students to work with IBM and IBM-compatible computers in a personal or business environment regardless of which application programs they will use. Students with little or no experience in the use of personal computers can use this book to learn about DOS 5.0. However, it will also be useful for those who are familiar with non-DOS computer systems or with other versions of DOS. The emphasis throughout the book is on using DOS as a powerful tool to enhance computer productivity. Units 1 and 2 present the concepts, terminology, and "big picture" of computer hardware and software in general. Unit 3 explores DOS from the perspective of the DOS prompt. Students who have had experience with earlier versions of DOS will find much that is familiar. They will also see, however, that many old standard DOS commands have been enhanced in version 5.0 and many new features have been added. Unit 4 introduces the DOS shell - the most obvious new feature in version 5.0 Students will become comfortable with the graphical user interface and mouse input device. The focus of the rest of the book is on DOS's role as a "file clerk" - providing methods for creating, organizing and maintaining computer data files. Unit 5 explains what a computer file is and shows students how to use the DOS editor, a full-screen text editor that is part of the DOS 5.0 package. Units 6 and 7 deal with the management of files, directories, and disks, providing students with the necessary tools for maintaining control over their data. Unit 8 takes the concept of maintaining control one step further - to the computer environment itself. In this unit students learn how to customize the Shell and Prompt interfaces, memory allocation, and start-up procedures. Then unit 9, QBasic - the programming environment that is part of the DOS 5.0 Package - is briefly examined along with some beginning programming techniques
