Police culture has been widely criticized as a source of resistance to change and reform, and is often misunderstood. This book seeks to capture the heart of police culture―including its tragedies and celebrations―and to understand its powerful themes of morality, solidarity, and common sense, by systematically integrating a broad literature on police culture into middle-range theory, and developing original perspectives about many aspects of police work.

The expansion of degrees and postgraduate qualifications on policing has come hand in hand with the need for a more scholarly and research-based approach to the subject. Students are increasingly encouraged to apply research to practice and this book is specifically designed to bring clarity to the concept of empirical research in policing. As an introduction to the theoretical explanations and assumptions that underpin the rationale of research design in policing, this book clearly illustrates the practical and ethical issues facing empirical research in a policing context, as well as the limitations of such research. Introduction to Policing Research brings together a range of leading scholars who have a wide range of experience conducting police research. Topics covered include: professional development, police culture, policing protests, private policing, policing and diversity, policing in transition, policing and mental health, policing and sensitive issues. This book is perfect for undergraduate and graduate students on policing degrees, as well as graduate students and researchers engaged with criminal justice. It is also essential reading for police officers taking professional and academic qualifications.

For Introduction to Policing, Law Enforcement, and specialization courses on policing at the freshman/sophomore undergraduate level. Written in a smooth style that promotes conceptual understanding and integration, this intriguing text on policing in America uses a "balance of forces" metaphor throughout to help assimilate discussions- centering material around a recurrent analytical theme that seeks to define police as a product of correlated social, historical, political, legal, individual, and organizational forces. Providing a detailed description of policing with probing analyses of current police and practice problems, it covers the complexity of policing in America, and offers a comprehensive survey of the different police and law enforcement agencies working in the country today.

This book is not an advanced engineering text. Rather, it is a practical presentation with traffic accident reconstruction principles presented in a simple, understandable manner so that the reader will easily retain these important concepts. The engineering principles involved are introduced at the elementary level, and in many cases equations used in freshman physics are derived. The authors believe that the derivations are presented in the simplest manner possible so that the reader will retain this material. The book is the result of an effort to compile over a period of years useful forensic engineering data, information, and analytical techniques over and above those taught to non-engineers. Many of the mathematical treatments are original. In general, the book reflects the authors’ combined over forty years experience of forensic investigations involving thousands of cases. It offers something for everyone interested in forensic engineering. In the new second edition, Chapters 3 to 5 have been substantially modified, and the remainder of the text has been edited to bring its various parts up to date. The experienced investigator will find a wealth of new ideas and relationships to fill in gaps in his knowledge and reinforce his analytical approaches. Those starting new in this work will have an advantage on their competition after studying this material. For the non-technical reader, most of the book is eminently readable. To an investigator, attorney, or insurance adjuster with only a nodding acquaintance with freshman physics, the book should be totally comprehensible.
