When trying to solicit authors for this book it became apparent that the causal factors for heterosis at the physiological and biochemical level are today almost as obscure as they were 30 years ago. Though biometrical-genetical analyses point to dispersion of complementary genes - not overdominance - as the major cause of the phenomenon, plant breeders' experience still suggests a cautious, pragmatic approach to the dominance-overdominance controversy in breeding hybrid cultivars. Thus we are faced with a striking discordance between our limited comprehension of the causal factors and mechanism of heter osis on the one hand, and the extensive agricultural practice of utiliza tion of hybrid vigor on the other. Such utilization is the result of the economic value of hybrid combinations displaying superior yields and qualities as well as stability of performance, of benefits derived in breeding programs, and of the enhanced varietal protection of proprietary rights. No comprehensive and critical analysis of the phenomenon of heterosis in economic plants has been published for the last three decades since the now classical book Heterosis, edited by J . W. Gowen (Iowa State College Press, Ames, Iowa, 1952). The present book attempts to fill the gap and to assess the status of our present knowl edge of the concept, the basis, the extent, and the application of heterosis in economic plants.

This book, Plant Breeding, has it bases in an earliertext entitled An Introduction to Plant Breeding by JackBrown and Peter Caligari, first published in 2008. The challengesfacing today’s plant breeders have never been moreoverwhelming, yet the prospects to contribute significantly toglobal food security and farmers’ quality of life have neverbeen more exciting and fulfilling.  Despite this there hasbeen a worrying decline in public funding for plantbreeding-related research and  support for internationalcenters of germplasm development and crop improvement.  In part, this has resulted in a serious reduction in the number ofyoung people interested in devoting their professional careers toplant breeding as well as the number of universities offering plantbreeding courses or conducting relevant research in plantbreeding. The authors’ aim in writing this book is to provide anintegrated and updated view of the current scientific progressrelated to diverse plant breeding disciplines, within the contextof applied breeding programs.  This excellent new book willencourage a new generation of students to pursue careers related toplant breeding and will assist a wider audience of agriculturalstudents, agronomists, policy makers and those with an interest inagriculture in gaining insight about the issues affecting plantbreeding and its key role in improving the quality of life ofpeople and in securing sufficient food, at the quality required andat an affordable price. With comprehensive coverage including questions designed forstudents, and an accompanying website containing additionalmaterial to help in the study of the subject, Plant Breedingis an ideal text for all those studying plant and crop sciences, and a convenient reference source for professionals working in thearea. All libraries within universities and research establishmentswhere biological and agricultural sciences are studied and taughtshould have multiple copies of this book.

Diversity within and among living organisms is both a biological impera tive and a biological conundrum. Phenotypic and genotypic diversity is the critical currency ofecological interactions and the evolution of life. Thus, it is not unexpected to find vast phytochemical diversity among plants. However, among the most compelling questions which arise among those interested in ecological phytochemistry is the extent, nature, and reasons for the diversity of chemieals in plants. The idea that natural products (secondary metabolites) are accidents of metabolism and have no biological function is an old one which has resurfaced recently under a new term "redundancy. " Redundancy in the broader sense can be viewed as duplication of effort. The co-occurrence of several classes of phytochemieals in a given plant may be redundancy. Is there unnecessary duplication of chemical defense systems and ifso, why? What selective forces have produced this result? On the other hand, why does the same compound often have multiple functions? At a symposium of the Phytochemical Society of North America held in August 1995, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, the topic "Phytochernical Redundancy in Ecological Interactions" was discussed. The chapters in this volume are based on that symposium. They both stimulate thought and provide some working hypotheses for future research. It is being increasingly recognized that functional diversity and multiplicity of function of natural products is the norm rather than the exception.

Plant Cytogenetics presents an up-to-date account of plant cytogenetic information that has been uncovered since the classic plant cytogenetics texts were published over two decades ago. Topics discussed include the handling of plant chromosomes, meiosis and its genetic control, a standard and universally accepted nomenclature for plant chromosomes, genome analysis and the chromosome pairing approach employed in biosystematic studies, the cytogenetic basis of somaclonal variation generated through cell and tissue cultures, and gene-chromosome-linkage group relationships. The book also presents a discussion of cytogenetic terminology. Plant Cytogenetics is an excellent text for agronomists, cytogeneticists, students, and researchers interested in plant cytogenetics.

Unlike the situation in the major cereals, the yields of Vicia faba have not been markedly increased during the last half century. There is no single cause for this but among those that have been important is the lack of cytogenetic understanding in relation to breeding performance. Since as a consequence, little genetic variation has been available to agronomists conclusions, probably unwarranted, have been drawn about the limited prospects for the faba bean. Against such a background it has been difficult to justify the investment of research resources in the crop. The central theme of this book is that with the establishment of cytogenetic studies in Vicia faba understanding of its genetic system will develop in relation to breeding improvement and thereafter some at least, of the impediments to yield increase can steadily though not dramatically, be removed. We have distinguished between longer and shorter papers and only the former include Abstracts. The latter amplify themes in the longer papers or were written to develop particular topics at the request of the editors. G.P. Chapman S.A.
