Whereas most previous work on Maya healing has focused on ritual and symbolism, this book presents evidence that confirms the scientific foundations of traditional Maya medicine. Data drawn from analysis of the medical practices of two Mayan-speaking peoples, the Tzeltal and Tzotzil, reveal that they have developed a large number of herbal remedies based on a highly sophisticated understanding of the physiology and symptomatology of common diseases and on an in-depth knowledge of medicinal plants. Here Elois Ann Berlin and Brent Berlin, along with their many collaborators, provide detailed information on Maya disease classification, symptomatology, and treatment of the most significant health conditions affecting the Highland Maya, the gastrointestinal diseases. The authors base their work on broad-ranging comparative ethno-medical and ethnobotanical data collected over seven years of original field research. In describing the Mayas' understanding and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, Berlin and Berlin show that the plants used as remedies are condition specific. Moreover, laboratory studies demonstrate that the most commonly agreed upon herbal remedies are potentially effective against the pathogenic agents underlying specific diseases and that they strongly affect the physiological processes associated with intestinal peristalsis. These findings suggest that the traditional Maya medical system is the result of long-term explicit empirical experimentation with the effects of herbal remedies on bodily function.

In this evocative biography, Benjamin E. Wise presents the singular life of William Alexander Percy (1885-1942), a queer plantation owner, poet, and memoirist from Mississippi. Though Percy is best known as a conservative apologist of the southern racial order, in this telling Wise creates a complex and surprising portrait of a cultural relativist, sexual liberationist, and white supremacist. We follow Percy as he travels from Mississippi around the globe and, always, back again to the Delta. Wise's exploration brings depth and new meaning to Percy's already compelling life story--his prominent family's troubled history, his elite education and subsequent soldiering in World War I, his civic leadership during the Mississippi River flood of 1927, his mentoring of writers Walker Percy and Shelby Foote, and the writing and publication of his classic autobiography, Lanterns on the Levee. This biography sets Percy's life and search for meaning in the context of his history in the Deep South and his experiences in the gay male world of the early twentieth century. In Wise's hands, these seemingly disparate worlds become one.

Practical Therapeutics for the Older Patient Denis O'Mahony and Una Martin The University of Birmingham, UK The proportion of elderly people, in particular those over 75 years of age, in the population is steadily rising. This demographic pattern brings with it increasing numbers of frail older people, often suffering from several chronic medical problems simultaneously, resulting in a greater demand for extra medical care and drug expenditure. By addressing problems particular to geriatric medicine, Practical Therapeutics for the Older Patient provides a framework for better prescribing in older patients. It is structured to provide: * Guidance to the management of common problems in older people, system by system * Emphasis on effective drugs * Non-drug therapy, where a purely pharmacological approach is inappropriate This comprehensive, concise and up-to-date volume will be invaluable to anyone who prescribes or dispenses drugs to older people, including hospital doctors, general practitioners, clinical medical students and nursing staff. "Unique in its comprehensive range and succinct format." Professor John Grimley Evans, University of Oxford, UK
