Product Description: Do extreme, unethical governmental policies often produce results opposite to those intended? This book considers the ironic outcomes of recent global events and concludes that there is a 'rule of reverse results' at work. While not a hard and fast law, the rule points out the increased probability that a policy will backfire if it is immoral while ethical policies, even if extreme, are unlikely to produce reverse results...read more

Who ought to do what, and for whom, if global justice is to progress? In this collection of essays on justice beyond borders, Onora O'Neill criticises theoretical approaches that concentrate on rights, yet ignore both the obligations that must be met to realise those rights, and the capacities needed by those who shoulder these obligations. She notes that states are profoundly anti-cosmopolitan institutions, and that even those committed to justice and universal rights often lack the competence and the will to secure them, let alone to secure them beyond their borders. She argues for a wider conception of global justice, in which obligations may be held either by states or by competent non-state actors, and in which borders themselves must meet standards of justice. This rich and wide-ranging collection will appeal to a broad array of academic researchers and advanced students of political philosophy, political theory, international relations and philosophy of law.

Product Description: The foreign policy writings of John Rawls and Amartya Sen provide insight and clarity into some of the most difficult problems confronting humanity. What is the most effective strategy of national defense? Does an effective strategy of national defense involve the possession of nuclear weapons? Ethics and International Affairs explores the extent and limits of contemporary international ethics and examines the ways in which the international community has responded to some of the most crucial challenges of the last ten years. At the center of the book is a discussion of how responsibility is viewed at individual, national, and international levels when facing the pressing problems of human rights, humanitarian intervention, environmental issues, considerations of gender, international economic justice, matters of war and peace, and the plight of refugees. While some authors revisit the very conception and interpretation of international ethics, others focus on the necessity to push for the better implementation and improvement of existing international norms. The result is an examination of how ethics are defined in today's specific contexts and how an understanding of the ethical may be developed from the articulation of the dilemmas encountered.
