Some children learn easily, while others struggle. How can teachers make sure that every child has opportunities to develop his or her talents? The answer is differentiation: changing the pace, level, or kind of instruction in response to learners' needs, styles, and/or interests. In this timely, practical guide, Diane Heacox presents a menu of strategies for any teacher faced with a spectrum of student needs and styles. Some are quick and easy-differentiating discussions, creating tiered assignments. Others are more comprehensive-matrix plans for designing curriculum units, "one-sentence lesson plans" that encompass content, process skills, and evidence of learning. Individual chapters focus on evaluation in a differentiated classroom and how to manage both behavior and work tasks. Diane describes ways to get to know your students and recognize that all have strengths and limitations. Not every gifted student is always ready for higher-level thinking; not every child with learning differences is always incapable of succeeding in a "higher group." Any curriculum can be differentiated-even a standard or mandated curriculum. Drawing on Bloom's Taxonomy, Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, other experts in the field, and her own experience in the classroom, Diane explains how to differentiate instruction in a wide variety of scenarios to provide variety and challenge in how teachers teach and in how students learn. Templates and forms simplify planning; examples illustrate differentiation in many content areas. Recommended for all teachers committed to reaching and teaching all learners. Includes reproducibles.

Since we educate by means of the environment, special attention must be given to the design of learning environments conducive to the cultivation of the educated person. An essential element of that design is ensuring the learner¹s interactivity with models of excellence, both in human resources and in learning materials. Fortunately, the technology of the information age provides students and teachers with the tools and vehicles through which models of excellence can be accessed. This book examines the new educational technologies and their potential applications to enrich the learning process, to ensure educational equality for all students, and to help cultivate the educated person. It is divided into four sections: Education in the Information Age, The Learning Environment, The New Learning and Telecommunications Technologies, and Necessary Conditions for Effective Utilization of the New Learning and Telecommunications Technologies. Section I examines the need for educational reform, the goal of the reform, and the role of technology in realizing that goal. Section II addresses the significance of the learning environment and the necessary conditions for providing teachers and students with access to models of excellence in human resources and in learning materials. Section III presents the new learning and telecommunication technologies with emphasis placed on their potential applications in education. Section IV focuses on necessary conditions conducive to the empowerment of the teachers to teach and the students to learn in the information age.

This book explores the impact new information and communication technologies are having on teaching and the way children learn. The book addresses key issues across all phases of primary and secondary education, both in the UK and internationally. ICT, Pedagogy and the Curriculum looks at the relationship between ICT, paradigms of teaching and learning, and the way in which curriculum subjects are represented. Three principal areas are addressed: * the wider perception of ICT in society, culture and schooling* the challenges to pedagogy* the way in which ICT not only supports learning and teaching but changes the nature of curriculum subjects. The tensions between the use of technology to replicate traditional practices, and the possibilities for transforming the curriculum and pedagogy are explored, offering an original and distinctively critical perspective on the way in which we understand ICT in education. It will be of interest to all primary and secondary teachers and those in initial teacher training who are concerned about current technology initiatives in education and how to respond to them.
