9781482741360 | Createspace Independent Pub, March 10, 2013, cover price $7.99 | About this edition: If in my childhood I had been asked to give the name of an Irish poem, I should certainly have said “Let Erin remember the days of old,” or “Rich and rare were the gems she wore”; for although among the ornamental books that lay on the round drawingroom table, the only one of Moore’s was Lalla Rookh, some guest would now and then sing one of his melodies at the piano; and I can remember vexing or trying to vex my governess by triumphant mention of Malachi’s collar of gold, she no doubt as well as I believing the “proud invader” it was torn from to have been, like herself, an English one.

Folk stories about the Irish Christian saints have been known for 1500 years. This collection is a treasure house of the tales according to the old writings and the memory of the people of Ireland. The best known saints are certainly St. Patrick, St. Brendan the Navigator, St. Brigid, and St. Columcille. Lady Gregory has included numerous tales about each of them, as well as stories about the fantastic voyages of the wandering hero, Maeldune. And, as Edward Malins reminds the reader in his foreword of 1972...""She has a poet's ear for the musical rhythms of Gaelic speech.

Lady (Augusta) Gregory (1852-1932) was a dramatist and folklorist. Along with the poet W. B. Yeats she was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, and co-founded the Abbey Theatre, Dublin. Born Isabella Augusta Persse in County Galway, she belonged to the Anglo-Irish ascendancy, which was closely associated with colonial rule. She married Sir William Gregory in 1880. Her conversion to Irish cultural nationalism began after the death of her husband and was heavily influenced by her visit in 1892 to Inisheer, one of the Aran Islands, where she learnt Irish and the Hiberno-English dialect of Kiltartin. Poets and Dreamers was her first publication and contained translations of the Irish-language poet Anthony Raftery, folk-tales, and plays by the Gaelic scholar and future first President of Ireland, Douglas Hyde.
