The information included in the book is based on the author's experience when walking the Hadrian's Wall path and finding that despite the wealth of information available in other publications what he really wanted to know much of the time when actually walking was "Where am I, how far until the accommodation/pint/food and roughly how long will it take me? (and to a lesser extent how many more sodding ups and downs does it involve?)". It's a fantastic walk, but knowing these things quickly is very reassuring.
