English summary: The letters of Philipp Jakob Spener (1635-1705), the founder of Pietism, are first-class sources for ecclesiastical and cultural history, offering as they do an insight into the development and the spread of the Pietist Movement. In addition, they possess unique informational value for many areas of spiritual and social life outside of the religious or church spheres. Since the handwritten material is scattered in archives and libraries all over the world, and the letters have come down to us partially in poor condition in old print, and for the most part without an addressee, there had been no access to these sources up to now. This edition which began with three volumes of letters from the Frankfurt period is making them available for the first time. Gerhard Menck in Hessisches Jahrbuch fur Landesgeschichte 44 (1994) S. 181f.The latest volume of Philipp Jakob Spener's Briefe (...) is a stupendous achievement now that it has arrived. (...) The editing as always is superb and names of correspondents have been supplied for almost all the letters with varying degrees of probability. In this volume Pietism begins to be a target of criticism, and the whole range of mystic spiritualists appear among the recepient. (...) British libraries should not fail to take this whole series.W.R. Ward in Journal of Ecclesiastical History 52/3 (2001), S. 571 f.
