Und dann erst kommt der "Ab -ge - sa. ng\' da. /3 der nidlt kurz und nicht zu la. ng, From "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg," Richard Wagner This final volume is concerned with some of the developments of the subject in the 1960's. In attempting to determine the simple groups, the first step was to settle the conjecture of Burnside that groups of odd order are soluble. The proof that this conjecture was correct is much too long and complicated for presentation in this text, but a number of ideas in the early stages of it led to a local theory of finite groups, so me aspects of which are discussed in Chapter X. Much of this discussion is a con tinuation of the theory of the transfer (see Chapter IV), but we also introduce the generalized Fitting subgroup, which played a basic role in characterization theorems, that is, in descriptions of specific groups in terms of group-theoretical properties alone. One of the earliest and most important such characterizations was given for Zassenhaus groups; this is presented in Chapter XI. Characterizations in terms of the centralizer of an involution are of particular importance in view of the theorem of Brauer and Fowler. In Chapter XII, one such theorem is given, in which the Mathieu group 9J'l1l and PSL(3, 3) are characterized.

For most of the last twenty years, sociologists have studied the âdeclineâ of religion in the modern worldâa decline they saw as a defining feature of modernity, which promotes materialism over spirituality. The revival and political strength of varying religious traditions around the world, however, has forced sociologists to reconsider. This paradox has led Hervieu-Léger to undertake a sociological redefinition and reexamination of religion. For religion to endure in the modern world, she finds, it must have deep roots in traditions and times in which it was not defined as irrelevant. This reasoning leads her to develop the concept of a âchain of memoryââa process by which individual believers become members of a community that links past, present, and future members. Thus, like cultural tradition, religion may be understood as a shared understanding with a collective memory that enables it to draw upon the deep well of its past for nourishment in the increasingly secular present.Hervieu-Legér also argues that the modern secular societies of the West have not, as is commonly assumed, outgrown or found secular substitutes for religious traditions; nor are they more ârationalâ than past societies. Rather, modern societies have become âamnesiacs,â no longer able to maintain the chain of memory that binds them to their religious pasts. Ironically, however, even as the modern world is destroying and losing touch with its traditional religious bases, it is also creating the need for a spiritual life and is thus opening up a space that only religion can fill. (view table of contents)

The Political Economy of Modern Britain provides an original discussion of Britain's relative economic decline since World War Two and offers approaches to overcome this poor economic performance.Detailed and comprehensive, this book has three basic objectives. First, it describes the key political and economic decisions or events which have shaped Britain's economic performance in the post-war period. Secondly, the authors critically discuss the range of explanations which have been offered by those seeking to understand Britain's relative economic decline. Finally, it offers an alternative approach to improving Britain's economic performance known as 'the strategic alignment of national and corporate competitiveness'. In this approach the authors attempt to escape from the traditional left right debate concerning the degree to which the state should replace the market in owning and controlling key sectors of the economy, and instead they focus on the state as a facilitator in the provision of assets required by firms competing in the international arena. This book will be welcomed by government and management striving to improve corporate and national competitiveness. Additionally academics and students interested in the fields of British politics, British political economy, British economic and social history, international political economy and European political economy will also find this a highly valuable source of information.
