"Award-winning author Katherine Marsh draws from Russian fairytales in The Door by the Staircase. When 12-year-old orphan Mary is suddenly adopted she thinks her world is finally on track. Instead, she discovers dark secrets and has hair-raising adventures alongside a new friend. A well-layered tale of magic, folklore, and believing in yourself." - Seira Wilson, Amazon EditorTwelve-year-old Mary Hayes can't stand her orphanage for another night. But when an attempted escape through the stove pipe doesn't go quite as well as she'd hoped, Mary fears she'll be stuck in the Buffalo Asylum for Young Ladies forever. The very next day, a mysterious woman named Madame Z appears at the orphanage requesting to adopt Mary, and the matron's all too happy to get the girl off her hands. Soon, Mary is fed a hearty meal, dressed in a clean, new nightgown and shown to a soft bed with blankets piled high. She can hardly believe she isn't dreaming! But when Mary begins to explore the strange nearby town with the help of her new friend, Jacob, she learns a terrifying secret about Madame Z's true identity. If Mary's not careful, her new home might just turn into a nightmare.Award-winning author Katherine Marsh draws from Russian fairytales in this darkly funny middle-grade fantasy novel.

WARNING: This is not the actual book Shadow Spell by Nora Roberts. Do not buy this Review if you are looking for a full copy of this great book. Read this review to gain a better perspective of the novel's high and low points, while also considering the presentation of an alternative outcome. Shadow Spell, the second installment of The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy, continues the paranormal tale left behind by Dark Witch. This review of the middle piece walks you through the novel's high and low points, while breaking down what is occurring behind the scenes. Cabhan has much stacked against him yet again, with warriors, descendants of Sorcha, and many others with great power hot on his heels. The summer solstice battle has come and gone, without a true winner, so the group decides to destroy him by attacking the source of his power. Cabhan prepares as he always does, by focusing on the weaknesses of each member, which this expert review also details. The plot in Shadow Spell weakens a bit, however, as Cabhan, true to his history, underestimates the bonds between those he wishes to destroy. The novel's true strength is in its portrayal of the budding romance between Connor and Meara. The steam emanating from them almost makes the actual good vs. evil theme seem like an afterthought, and the novel is better for it. Picturesque rural Ireland and the dense characters are the true stars in Shadow Spell, not the urban fantasy aspect.

From the author of Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy comes the story of a friendship between two girls set in Victorian England, with magical machines, wizards, witches, a mysterious underworld, and a race against time.   Annabel Grey is primed for a proper life as a young lady in Victorian England. But when her mother suddenly disappears, she’s put in the care of two eccentric aunts who thrust her into a decidedly un-ladylike life, full of potions and flying broomsticks and wizards who eat nothing but crackers. Magic, indeed! Who ever heard of such a thing? Before Annabel can assess the most ladylike way to respond to her current predicament, she is swept up in an urgent quest. Annabel is pitted against another young witch, Kitty, to rescue the sacred Moreover Wand from the dangerous underworld that exists beneath London. The two girls outsmart trolls, find passage through a wall of faerie bones, and narrowly escape a dragon, but it doesn’t take long for Annabel to see that the most dangerous part of her journey is her decision to trust this wild, magical girl.Sparkling with Karen Foxlee’s enchanting writing, this is a bewitching tale of one important wand and two most magical girls."[Foxlee's] heroines have grit and heart, and they are willing to get dirty. And they do. Foxlee’s nicely wry tone and moments of incongruous humor break up the tension, while Annabel’s race against time in a harrowing journey deep under London keeps the pages turning. Deliciously complex and convincingly detailed."--Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review"Kids who enjoyed Foxlee’s Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy and fans of Hardinge’s Cuckoo Song will find similar otherworldly appeal in this enthralling adventure."--The Bulletin, Starred review"Memorable for its vivid imagery and stylish, thoughtful prose."--Horn Book Magazine
