9780865437043 | Africa World Pr, October 1, 1998, cover price $79.95 | About this edition: This is the first book to present the African perspective on the Bretton Woods approach to structural adjustment, and it does so with the input and support of top economists and scholars from every corner of Africa.

Structural adjustment is not just an economic strategy but, this book argues, embodies a social, cultural and even religious vision for the remaking of Africa and the world. This highly original critique of the World Bank's structural adjustment agenda in Africa explodes the value-free pretensions of economics. It provides a more integrated understanding of questions of faith and values in development than has been available from theologians and social scientists up to now, and helps to explain why churches are so intimately involved in these struggles. The book focuses on three aspects of structural adjustment in Africa: the fundamentalist character of World Bank thinking in the scale of its ambitions and its denial of the legitimacy of contrary views; criticisms of structural adjustment from a variety of social science perspectives; and the resistance to this agenda emerging from African churches and social movements.

9781856492942 | Zed Books, June 1, 1995, cover price $25.00 | About this edition: This book asserts two central questions in African development today: have structural adjustment programmes failed, and ought the World Bank and the IMF to be paying more attention to the particular circumstances of individual countries and to the alternative policies being proposed by Africans?

No one can fail to be aware of the incredible impact that the IMF and the World Bank have had on Africa. Their structural adjustment programmes were deliberately designed to shock African economies into free market reform and ensuing stability. But when `getting the prices right' first swamped the World Bank's African economic plans in the early 1980s, few bothered to analyse the politics of a reform package whose immediate impact was violent and unsettling. While Africa has come a long way since then, the goal of market reform must be as important as the task of understanding the politics of unleashing the forces of the market. Not least, is the question of democratisation, which the Bank itself now attempts to force through with loan conditions. This book is the culmination of intense debate by African authors across the continent. Three sections make up a comprehensive analysis of adjustment regimes, their perspectives and the political context in which they have survived, or not. Country case studies in both anglophone and francophone Africa round up the analysis.
