Synchrotron radiation has become a very important tool for investigating condensed matter. Many different techniques have been developed which can provide information on the electronic and the geometric structure of solids and surfaces. At the heart of them all is the phenomenon of interaction of electromagnetic radiation with condensed matter. At a time when new extremely powerful third-generation synchrotron radiation sources are being planned and built, this volume presents a timely overview of the present status of synchrotron radiation research and includes the background fundamental theoretical aspects of electronic structure of condensed matter and of condensed-matter interaction with photons.

The Fourth Symposium on Surface Physics was held to summarize important new developments in theoretical and experimental studies of solid surfaces. In recent years, the physical and chemical properties of surfaces and interfaces have been extensively investigated. This meeting was mainly devoted to the crystallographic and electron structure aspects of surface physics, and to a detailed understanding of the electronic, structural and magnetic properties of clean surfaces, and adsorbed aggregates on surfaces and interfaces. New and newly-refined techniques were presented and discussed. This proceedings volume comprises three main parts: the first contains the invited lectures indicating the main topics of the meeting; the second and third parts summarize the oral papers and posters in a more condensed form.

Product Description: A traditional way to honor distinguished scientists is to combine collections of papers solicited from friendly colleagues into dedicatory volumes. To honor our friend and colleague Mort Gurtin on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday, we followed a surer path to produce a work of intrinsic and lasting scientific value: We collected pa pers that we deemed seminal in the field of evolving phase interfaces in solids, a field to which Mort Gurtin himself has made fundamental contributions...read more (view table of contents, read Amazon.com's description)

Product Description: This school was concerned with surface properties of liquids at solid/liquid, liquid/liquid, gas/liquid interfaces. Renewal of interest in these domains belonging to classical physicochemistry appeared rather recently. This was motivated by the industrial importance of phenomena such as wetting of solids by liquids, interactions between colloidal particles, anchoring of liquid crystals, stabilization of liquid/liquid interfaces by amphiphilic molecules, and kinetics of foam...read more
