Explains the nature of radioactivity, examines its link with cancer, tells how to reduce radiation risks, and describes the government's role in regulating the nuclear industry

Paperback:

9780394746500 | Vintage Books, June 1, 1981, cover price $4.95 | About this edition: Explains the nature of radioactivity, examines its link with cancer, tells how to reduce radiation risks, and describes the government's role in regulating the nuclear industry

Product Description: In late 1971 we were involved in a study of the interaction of radiation with matter and were trying to use measurements of radiation fluorescence in biological molecules to indicate how radiation affected living cells. It soon became apparent that we were working in the dark; the doses we used to get a significant signal were too large to be of interest for radiation biology and although the DNA molecule appeared to be the most likely target molecule we did not know which sort of events and which sort oflesions were the most important...read more

Product Description: Emerging from the estimable Doctor Selman's own teaching experience, this book gives radiologic technologists and beginning radiology residents a clear, authoritative guide to the essentials of radiobiology. A short historical introduction precedes discussions of pertinent physics and cellular biology and of their interplay: modes of action of x and gamma rays, cell and tissue response, cellular radiosensitivity, and factors affecting cell response to ionizing radiation...read more

In October 1982, a small international symposium was held at the Gesellschaft fUr Strahlen- und Umweltforschung mbH (GSF) in Munich as a satellite meeting of the IX International Conference on Analytical Cytology. The symposium focussed on cytometric approaches to biological dosimetry, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the first meeting on this subject ever held. There was strong encouragement from the 75 attendees and from others to publish a proceedings of the symposium. Hence this book, containing 30 of the 36 presentations, has been assembled. Dosimetry, the accurate and systematic determination of doses, usually refers to grams of substance administered or rads of ionization or some such measure of exposure of a patient, a victim or an experimental system. The term also can be used to describe the quantity of an ultimate, active agent as delivered to the appropriate target material within a biological system. Thus, for mutagens, one can speak of DNA dosimetry, meaning the number of adducts produced in the DNA of target cells such as bone-marĀ row stem cells or spermatogonia.
