In October 1982, a small international symposium was held at the Gesellschaft fUr Strahlen- und Umweltforschung mbH (GSF) in Munich as a satellite meeting of the IX International Conference on Analytical Cytology. The symposium focussed on cytometric approaches to biological dosimetry, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the first meeting on this subject ever held. There was strong encouragement from the 75 attendees and from others to publish a proceedings of the symposium. Hence this book, containing 30 of the 36 presentations, has been assembled. Dosimetry, the accurate and systematic determination of doses, usually refers to grams of substance administered or rads of ionization or some such measure of exposure of a patient, a victim or an experimental system. The term also can be used to describe the quantity of an ultimate, active agent as delivered to the appropriate target material within a biological system. Thus, for mutagens, one can speak of DNA dosimetry, meaning the number of adducts produced in the DNA of target cells such as bone-mar row stem cells or spermatogonia.

The editors are pleased to present these Proceedings of the V Course of the "International School of Radiation Damage and Pro- tection" of the "E. Majorana Centre", held in Erice (Italy) in No- vember 1983. The lectures and discussions among leading scientists in various disciplines of physics, engineering, biophysics, cellular biology, physiology and medicine from 11 countries are included in this compilation. In this volume we have attempted to explore all aspects of the interaction of static and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF: 0-300 Hz) electric and magnetic fields with biological tissue, systems and whole organisms; we considered dosimetry and what is known or pre- sumed concerning basic interactions, responses from the cellular and molecular level to the whole organism. Discussions of medical appli- cations as well as epidemiologic investigations related to high volt- age transmission were held with critiques of methodologies used and recommendations for future approaches. Consideration was also given to the necessity and principles of setting protection standards for man and the environment. We believe this is the first attempt to put all this informa- tion together into one volume to provide perspective for understand- ing the influence of static and ELF electric and magnetic fields on biological systems. We hope our attempts were successful. Martino Grandolfo Sol M. The biological action of radiation undoubtedly constitutes an issue of actual con cern, particularly after incidences like those in Harrisburg or Chernobyl. These considerations, however, were not the reason for writing this book although it is hoped that it will also be helpful in this respect. The interaction of radiation with biological systems is such an interesting research objective that to my mind no special justification is needed to pursue these problems. The combination of physics, chemistry and biology presents on one hand a fascinating challenge to the student, on the other, it may lead to insights which are not possible if the dif ferent subjects remain clearly separated. Special problems of radiation biology have quite often led to new approaches in physics (or vice versa), a recent example is "microdosimetry" (chapter 4). Biological radiation a9tion comprises all levels of biological organization. It starts with the absorption in essential atoms and molecules and ends with the development of cancer and genetic hazards to future generations. The structure of the book reflects this. Beginning with physical and chemical fundamentals, it then turns to a description of chemical and subcellular systems. Cellular effects form a large part since they are the basis for understanding all further responses. Reactions of the whole organism, concentrating on mammals and especially humans, are subsequently treated. The book concludes with a short discussion of problems in radiation protection and the application of radiation in medical therapy. These last points are necessarily short and somewhat superficial.

The search for ways to overcome tumour radioresistance is a major problem of experimental and clinical radiation oncology. The diffi- culties involved in the attempts to solve this problem are a matter of common knowledge. In many a laboratory extensive studies are un- derway of factors determining tumour tissue response to irradiation and of methods for exerting directional effect upon those factors. Such studies have revealed that, at least at the cellular level, a considerable number of factors manifest themselves which are respon- sible for radiation effect (1] * Among those are: spatial heteroge- neity of tumour cell population producing radioresistant cell reser- ves (hypoxic cells of solid tumours); differing radiosensitivities of cell life cycle phases; intrinsic dynamics of the processes of radi- ation damage and postradiation cell recovery; induction of prolifera- tive processes in response to the death of some cells within the po- pulation; the stochastic nature of cell kinetics and complicated in- teraction between individual cell subpopulations corresponding to di- fferent tumour loci. Questions arise as to whether the researchers are now in possession of adequate means for interpreting experimental findings and clinical evidence and whether there are procedures for performing complex analysis and predicting specific tumour responses to various irradiation regimens and to combined antitumoral effects, taking into account the complexities of the phenomena under study.
