Herbicides are part of modern agricultural production systems and therefore contribute significantly to the economy of agricultural products. At the same time, herbicides are potent and specific inhibitors of plant metabolism and may therefore be used as valuable tools in basic plant physiological research. A well-known example is the photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicide diuron, known to plant physiologists as DCMU, which has become one of the essentials in modern photosynthesis research. Similarly, knowledge in other areas of plant metabolism may be advanced by the use of herbicides as specific inhibitors. This book describes the effects of herbicides on the metabolism of higher plants from the viewpoint of the plant physiologist. The material of this book is therefore, as far as possible, divided into areas of metabolism. This book intends (1) to present the reader with current knowledge and views in the area of herbicide modes of action and (2) to promote the future use of herbicides as metabolic inhibitors in plant physiological research to the advantage of both, the pesticide and the plant sciences. During the past ten years there has been a marked integration of approaches within the areas of study concerned with the translocation of assimilates in higher plants. Researchers from various fields, such as horticulture, physiology and biochemistry, have found common ground as the integrative role that phloem transport plays within the major processes of the plant has become increasingly apparent. The plethora of investigations from such a wide range of disciplines have resulted in a greatly enhanced comprehension of the fundamental processes involved in the partitioning and compartmentation of photoassimilates between source and sink tissues within plants. The aim of this book is to present students with major conceptual developments and recent research in the field, provided in a series of essays by international specialists.

From Galileo, who used the hollow stalks of grass to demonstrate the idea that peripherally located construction materials provide most of the resistance to bending forces, to Leonardo da Vinci, whose illustrations of the parachute are alleged to be based on his study of the dandelion’s pappus and the maple tree’s samara, many of our greatest physicists, mathematicians, and engineers have learned much from studying plants. A symbiotic relationship between botany and the fields of physics, mathematics, engineering, and chemistry continues today, as is revealed in Plant Physics. The result of a long-term collaboration between plant evolutionary biologist Karl J. Niklas and physicist Hanns-Christof Spatz, Plant Physics presents a detailed account of the principles of classical physics, evolutionary theory, and plant biology in order to explain the complex interrelationships among plant form, function, environment, and evolutionary history. Covering a wide range of topics—from the development and evolution of the basic plant body and the ecology of aquatic unicellular plants to mathematical treatments of light attenuation through tree canopies and the movement of water through plants’ roots, stems, and leaves—Plant Physics is destined to inspire students and professionals alike to traverse disciplinary membranes.

The molecular aspects of recognition and transduction of different kinds of signals is a research area that is spawning increasing interest world-wide. Major advances have been made in animal systems but recently plants too, have become particularly attractive because of their promising role in biotechnology. The type of signals peculiar to the plant world and the similarity of plant transduction pathways investigated thus far to their animal counterparts are prompting more and more studies in this modern area of cell biology. The present book provides an up-to-date, comprehensive survey of all aspects of the recognition and transduction of plant signals of both chemical and physical origin such as hormones, light, toxins and elicitors. The contributing authors are drawn from diverse areas of plant physiology and plant molecular biology and present here different approaches to studying the recognition and transduction of different signals which specifically trigger molecular processes in plants.Recent advances in the field are reviewed, providing the reader with the current state of knowledge as well as insight into research perspectives and future developments. The book should interest a wide audience that includes not only researchers, advanced students, and teachers of plant biology, biochemistry and agriculture, but it has also significant implications for people working in related fields of animal systems.
