The aim of this book is to provide a general introduction, for the specialist and for students, to the whole field of cancer research. After a general introduction describing the pathology and natural history of the disease, each section gives a more detailed, but nevertheless general summary of its particular area, giving principles rather than a mass of information. Each chapter gives a list for further reading, and there is an extensive glossary. Each topic is discussed by an acknowledged expert who is able to give an authoritative review, but one which is aimed to be comprehensible to the non-expert. The book should give a wider understanding of the practical problems of cancer treatment and research, and indicates the areas in which exciting new developments are taking place and how the application of scientific technology may lead to the solution of many problems in cancer biology. The second edition expands in the areas in which there have been rapid advances in knowledge, especially from the application of new technology. In particular the chapters on genetic and chromosomal changes, growth factors, immunotherapy, and epidemiology have been expanded, and new information on viral and chemical carcinogenesis added. The lists of references and books and articles for further reading have also been updated, as has the glossary. For this second edition many of the illustrations are new or have been redrawn. Comments and criticisms from readers and reviewers have been taken into account in revising the text. (view table of contents)
