How old are you?  The more thought you bring to bear on the question, the harder it is to answer.  For we age simultaneously in different ways: biologically, psychologically, socially. And we age within the larger framework of a culture, in the midst of a history that predates us and will outlast us. Looked at through that lens, many aspects of late modernity would suggest that we are older than ever, but Robert Pogue Harrison argues that we are also getting startlingly younger―in looks, mentality, and behavior. We live, he says, in an age of juvenescence.   Like all of Robert Pogue Harrison's books, Juvenescence ranges brilliantly across cultures and history, tracing the ways that the spirits of youth and age have inflected each other from antiquity to the present. Drawing on the scientific concept of neotony, or the retention of juvenile characteristics through adulthood, and extending it into the cultural realm, Harrison argues that youth is essential for culture’s innovative drive and flashes of genius. At the same time, however, youth―which Harrison sees as more protracted than ever―is a luxury that requires the stability and wisdom of our elders and the institutions. “While genius liberates the novelties of the future,” Harrison writes, “wisdom inherits the legacies of the past, renewing them in the process of handing them down.”   A heady, deeply learned excursion, rich with ideas and insights, Juvenescence could only have been written by Robert Pogue Harrison. No reader who has wondered at our culture's obsession with youth should miss it.

After the birth of my second son some 11 years ago, I was painfully torn by the timing of my reentry to work-my wish to return to a prestigious and stimulating position as chief psychologist of a large agency, or my equally powerful wish to enjoy fully my beautiful new son's infancy, undivided and untorn. At the time I had a dream that my body was cut in half at the waist-my head leaned to the books neatly contained on the library shelves; my belly went to the crib, all sweet-smelling and soft. Not having had the opportunity to be "un divided" with my first son (now 17 years old), I chose to resign my agency position and stay home as long as I wished and then develop my private practice. It was a decision that at the time entailed much loss-cerebral, collegial, social, pres tigious-and generated some self-doubt, but in retrospect it is not regretted and was perhaps wise. This son's infancy will always be remembered as a time in which I experienced mothering with ease and grace.

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." -- Albert Einstein Modern business leaders are just too aware of how much the world has changed in the last decades and continues to do so. It is little wonder then that even the best of us can feel overwhelmed by the many demands we now face in our working and private lives. Summarizing the knowledge and experiences of three experts in the field, and offering practical insights from specialists around the world, this book offers a new approach to leadership and personal development by focussing on the links between these two areas. The good old times of planning one's development in a linear, step-by-step fashion over a lifetime are over. While recognising that there are different learning styles and personality types, the authors present a more proactive, flexible and emergent approach to your development. Topics such as sustainability, complexity and creativity are considered key issues that should play a role in not only developing a positive, future society, but also in refining the current and future you. This modern approach will give you a cutting-edge advantage in our fast changing world. Since the three authors whole heartedly agree with Einstein's maxim, this book should be considered an attempt to equip you with new levels of thinking and new skill sets to make you more successful at leading and developing yourself and others in a variety of contexts. With structured activities and proven techniques from people who have successfully applied the lessons found in this book, Leadership and Personal Development, A toolbox for the 21 century professional, you will be armed with an effective approach to development.
