This isn't just another variation on the same theme--this textbook offers something new and better for the course. Hurlburt's unique, eyeball-estimation techniques, introduced in the first edition of this text, have won praise from faculty and students. Hurlburt's approach trains students to think critically and discriminate among various statistical techniques. Using Hurlburt's methods, students learn to "read" a graph of data and quickly predict what the statistic will show. Hurlburt also effectively uses repetition and a progressive, cumulative integration of concepts, so students build upon what they learn as they progress through the course rather than learning individual topics in isolation. Hurlburt's approach not only motivates students, but instills in them a true conceptual understanding of what's going on behind the mechanical calculations of statistical procedures. This new edition retains those elements that make the text so noteworthy, while it incorporates more "traditional" content and computer exercises that can be worked with standard statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS, or Minitab. Responding to the comments of users, Hurlburt has modified his presentation of the eyeball-estimation techniques -- emphasizing them in the descriptive statistics sections, but de-emphasizing them in the inferential statistics sections.

Mathematical psychology is an interdisciplinary area of research in which methods of mathematics, operations research, and computer science in psychology are used. Now more than thirty years old, the field has continued to grow rapidly and has taken on a life of its own. This volume summarizes recent progress in mathematical psychology as seen by some of the leading figures in the field as well as some of its leading young researchers. The papers presented in this volume reflect the most important current directions of research in mathematical psychology. They cover topics in measurement, decision and choice, psychophysics and psychometrics, knowledge representation, neural nets and learning models, and cognitive modeling. Some of the major ideas included are new applications of concepts of measurement theory to social phenomena, new directions in the theory of probabilistic choice, surprising results in nonlinear utility theory, applications of boolean methods in the theory of knowledge spaces, applications of neural net ideas to concept learning, developments in the theory of parallel processing models of response time, new results in inhibition theory, and new concepts about paired associate learning.

Each chapter includes: an overview; basic statistical procedures (formulas, computations, and numerous step-wise instructions and lists); advanced (optional) material; a summary (lists of important points from each of the preceeding sections which serves as a study guide); and an exercise set. The author shows the role statistics play in research, helping motivate students as they see its applications in the clinical areas of psychological research via examples. The book emphasizes connections between seeemingly disparate statistical procedures.

A comprehensive and user-friendly introduction to statistics-now revised and updated Introductory Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences has had a long and successful history and is a popular and well-respected statistics text. Now in its sixth edition, the text has been thoroughly revised to present all the topics students in the behavioral sciences need in a uniquely accessible format that aids in the comprehension and implementation of the statistical analyses most commonly used in the behavioral sciences. Using a continuous narrative that explains statistics and tracks a common data set throughout, the authors have developed an innovative approach that makes the material unintimidating and memorable, providing a framework that connects all of the topics in the text and allows for easy comparison of different statistical analyses. New features in this Sixth Edition include: * Different aspects of a common data set are used to illustrate the various statistical methods throughout the text, with an emphasis on drawing connections between seemingly disparate statistical procedures and formulas * Computer exercises based on the same large data set and relevant to that chapter's content. The data set can be analyzed by any available statistical software * New "Bridge to SPSS" sections at the end of each chapter explain, for those using this very popular statistical package, how to perform that chapter's statistical procedures by computer, and how to translate the output from SPSS * New chapters on multiple comparisons and repeated-measures ANOVA

STATISTICAL METHODS FOR PSYCHOLOGY surveys the statistical techniques commonly used in the behavioral and social sciences, especially psychology and education. This book has two underlying themes that are more or less independent of the statistical hypothesis tests that are the main content of the book. The first theme is the importance of looking at the data before formulating a hypothesis. With this in mind, the author discusses, in detail, plotting data, looking for outliers, and checking assumptions (Graphical displays are used extensively). The second theme is the importance of the relationship between the statistical test to be employed and the theoretical questions being posed by the experiment. To emphasize this relationship, the author uses real examples to help the student understand the purpose behind the experiment and the predictions made by the theory. Although this book is designed for students at the intermediate level or above, it does not assume that students have had either a previous course in statistics or a course in math beyond high-school algebra.
