This book is designed to serve senior-level engineering students taking a capstone design course in fluid and thermal systems design. It is built from the ground up with the needs and interests of practicing engineers in mind; the emphasis is on practical applications. The book begins with a discussion of design methodology, including the process of bidding to obtain a project, and project management techniques. The text continues with an introductory overview of fluid thermal systems (a pump and pumping system, a household air conditioner, a baseboard heater, a water slide, and a vacuum cleaner are among the examples given), and a review of the properties of fluids and the equations of fluid mechanics. The text then offers an in-depth discussion of piping systems, including the economics of pipe size selection. Janna examines pumps (including net positive suction head considerations) and piping systems. He provides the reader with the ability to design an entire system for moving fluids that is efficient and cost-effective. Next, the book provides a review of basic heat transfer principles, and the analysis of heat exchangers, including double pipe, shell and tube, plate and frame cross flow heat exchangers. Design considerations for these exchangers are also discussed. The text concludes with a chapter (10) of term projects that may be undertaken by teams of students.

Providing a comprehensive overview of the radiative behavior and properties of materials, the fifth edition of this classic textbook describes the physics of radiative heat transfer, development of relevant analysis methods, and associated mathematical and numerical techniques. Retaining the salient features and fundamental coverage that have made it popular, Thermal Radiation Heat Transfer, Fifth Edition has been carefully streamlined to omit superfluous material, yet enhanced to update information with extensive references. Includes four new chapters on Inverse Methods, Electromagnetic Theory, Scattering and Absorption by Particles, and Near-Field Radiative Transfer Keeping pace with significant developments, this book begins by addressing the radiative properties of blackbody and opaque materials, and how they are predicted using electromagnetic theory and obtained through measurements. It discusses radiative exchange in enclosures without any radiating medium between the surfaces―and where heat conduction is included within the boundaries. The book also covers the radiative properties of gases and addresses energy exchange when gases and other materials interact with radiative energy, as occurs in furnaces. To make this challenging subject matter easily understandable for students, the authors have revised and reorganized this textbook to produce a streamlined, practical learning tool that: Applies the common nomenclature adopted by the major heat transfer journals Consolidates past material, reincorporating much of the previous text into appendices Provides an updated, expanded, and alphabetized collection of references, assembling them in one appendix Offers a helpful list of symbols With worked-out examples, chapter-end homework problems, and other useful learning features, such as concluding remarks and historical notes, this new edition continues its tradition of serving both as a comprehensive textbook for those studying and applying radiative transfer, and as a repository of vital literary references for the serious researcher.

Most of the texts on heat transfer available in recent years have focused on the mathematics of the subject, typically at an advanced level. Engineering students and engineers who have not moved immediately into graduate school need a reference that provides a strong, practical foundation in heat transfer-one that emphasizes real-world problems and helps develop their problem-solving skills.Engineering Heat Transfer fills that need. Extensively revised and thoroughly updated, the Second Edition of this popular text continues to de-emphasize high level mathematics in favor of effective, accurate modeling. A generous number of real-world examples amplify the theory and show how to use derived equations to model physical problems. Exercises that parallel the examples build readers' confidence and prepare them to effectively confront the more complex situations they encounter as professionals.Concise and user-friendly, Engineering Heat Transfer covers conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer in a manner that does not overwhelm the reader and is uniquely suited to the actual practice of engineering.

This thermodynamics text is specifically designed for students on a first course in thermodynamics on a materials science or related degree. Treatment is general, and the book could also be used on chemistry, physics and engineering courses. It adopts an approach based upon a general criterion for equilibrium (developed directly from the law of thermodynamics), which yields a general strategy for obtaining conditions for equilibrium. This strategy is applied to a collection of systems of increasing complexity and sophistication to derive in each case the conditions for equilibrium - working equations for solving practical problems in thermodynamics are shown to be restatements of these equilibrium conditions. The level of discussion is rigorous, but no steps are ommited in establishing the conclusions. This provides the student with the knowledge to handle the thermodynamics of the most complex kinds of systems; in addition, the presentation applies to all classes of materials including applications to ceramics, metals, polymers and electronic materials. A solutions manual is also available (0-07-016314-6).
