This masterful synthesis of criticism and biography surveys all of Hermann Hesse's major works and many of his minor ones in relation to the intricate psychological design of his entire life history. Eugene Stelzig examines what it means to be an "autobiographical writer" by considering Hesse's fictions of the self as an exemplary instance of the relationship between life and art and between biography and autobiography. In a graceful and inviting style, he frees this major confessional writer from the confines of German culture and the status of "cult figure" of the 1960s, and situates him in the tradition of world literature and in a variety of literary, psychological, philosophical, and religious contexts. Three introductory chapters on autobiography and Hesse set the stage for a chronological study. Then follows a penetrating analysis of the balance between biographical fact and confessional fantasy in Hesse's long career, from the failed autobiography of his first literary success, Beneath the Wheel, through the protracted midlife crisis of the grotesque Steppenwolf period, to the visionary autobiography of his magisterial fictional finale, The Glass Bead Game. Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. Product Description: Pro Bono? discusses philanthropy not as a social or humanitarian practice but as an integrated part of present-day creative capitalism, having a direct relation to its growing inequality. The book investigates four expressions of philanthropy as ideology: consumer philanthropy, where we are asked to consume with good conscience; corporate philanthropy where businesses engage in social work and where philanthropic associations reengineer themselves to mimic corporations; billionaire philanthropy where conspicuous consumption is now being supplemented with conspicuous philanthropy; and finally celebrity philanthropy where now one of the hallmarks of a celebrity is the commitment to use that fame to do good...read more

A masterpiece of German literature, this is the only edition in print in the English-speaking world of the complete Wilhelm Meister—both Wilhelm Meister's Years of Apprenticeship and Wilhelm Meister's Years of Travel Spring had appeared in its full magnificence—an untimely storm that had been threatening all day broke turbulently on the heights, the rain moved over the countryside, the sun came out again in its radiance, and against the grey background the splendid rainbow became visible. Wilhelm was riding towards it, and looked at it with melancholy. Seduced by the chimerical world of the theater and taking upon himself the grand ambition of becoming a successful performer and dramatist, the merchant's son Wilhelm Meister embarks on a tumultuous quest of self-discovery. Along his path he finds himself having to negotiate love, desire, and the need to face up to his own past and responsibilities. A landmark in the history of European literature, this novel is not only one of the key works of Weimar Classicism and the prototype for the Bildungsroman genre, but also a timeless tale of coming into one's own and a fascinating portrayal of the late-18th-century theater world.
