Extended Finite Element Method provides an introduction to the extended finite element method (XFEM), a novel computational method which has been proposed to solve complex crack propagation problems. The book helps readers understand the method and make effective use of the XFEM code and software plugins now available to model and simulate these complex problems. The book explores the governing equation behind XFEM, including level set method and enrichment shape function. The authors outline a new XFEM algorithm based on the continuum-based shell and consider numerous practical problems, including planar discontinuities, arbitrary crack propagation in shells and dynamic response in 3D composite materials.Authored by an expert team from one of China's leading academic and research institutionsOffers complete coverage of XFEM, from fundamentals to applications, with numerous examplesProvides the understanding needed to effectively use the latest XFEM code and software tools to model and simulate dynamic crack problems

9780124077171 | Academic Pr, March 31, 2014, cover price $120.00 | About this edition: Extended Finite Element Method provides an introduction to the extended finite element method (XFEM), a novel computational method which has been proposed to solve complex crack propagation problems.

In the span of only a few decades, the finite element method has become an important numerical technique for solving problems in the subject of charged particle optics. The situation has now developed up to the point where finite element simulation software is sold commercially and routinely used in industry. The introduction of the finite element method in charged particle optics came by way of a PHD thesis written by Eric Munro at the University of Cambridge, England, in 1971 [1], shortly after the first papers appeared on its use to solve Electrical Engineering problems in the late sixties. Although many papers on the use of the finite element method in charged particle optics have been published since Munro's pioneering work, its development in this area has not as yet appeared in any textbook. This fact must be understood within a broader context. The first textbook on the finite element method in Electrical Engineering was published in 1983 [2]. At present, there are only a handful of other books that describe it in relation to Electrical Engineering topics [3], let alone charged particle optics. This is but a tiny fraction of the books dedicated to the finite element method in other subjects such as Civil Engineering. The motivation to write this book comes from the need to redress this imbalance. There is also another important reason for writing this book.

This important textbook provides an introduction to the concepts of the newly developed extended finite element method (XFEM) for fracture analysis of structures, as well as for other related engineering applications. One of the main advantages of the method is that it avoids any need for remeshing or geometric crack modelling in numerical simulation, while generating discontinuous fields along a crack and around its tip. The second major advantage of the method is that by a small increase in number of degrees of freedom, far more accurate solutions can be obtained. The method has recently been extended to nonlinear materials and other disciplines such as modelling contact and interface, simulation of inclusions and holes, moving and changing phase problems, and even to multiscale analyses. The book is self contained, with summaries of both classical and modern computational techniques. The main chapters include a comprehensive range of numerical examples describing various features of XFEM.

Basic Mathematical Skills with Geometry, 7/e by Baratto/Bergman is part of the latest offerings in the successful Streeter-Hutchison Series in Mathematics. The seventh edition continues the hallmark approach of encouraging the learning of mathematics by focusing its coverage on mastering math through practice. This worktext seeks to provide carefully detailed explanations and accessible pedagogy to introduce basic mathematical skills and put the content in context. The authors use a three-pronged approach (I. Communication, II. Pattern Recognition, and III. Problem Solving) to present the material and stimulate critical thinking skills. Items such as Math Anxiety boxes, Check Yourself exercises, and Activities represent this approach and the underlying philosophy of mastering math through practice. The exercise sets have been expanded, organized, and clearly labeled. Vocational and professional-technical exercises have been added throughout. Repeated exposure to this consistent structure should help advance the student’s skills in relating to mathematics. The book is designed for a one-semester basic math course and is appropriate for lecture, learning center, laboratory, or self-paced courses. It is accompanied by numerous useful supplements, including McGraw-Hill’s online homework management system, MathZone.
