Without oxygen, no part of the bodynot the brain, the heart, the legs, the arms, or anything elsewould work. The lungs are the most important component of the respiratory system, the process by which oxygen is supplied to all living cells. Readers will discover how we breathe, how oxygen affects metabolism, and the relationship between the heart and lungs. Full-color images and clearly labeled diagrams illuminate every detail of the lungs structure and functions.

The Ninth Course of the International School of Cosmology and Gravita tion of the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture is concerned with "Topological Properties and Global Structure of Space-Time." We consider this topic to possess great importance. Our choice has also been influenced by the fact that there are many quest ions as yet unre solved. Standard general relativity describes space-time as a four-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold, but it does not prescribe its large-scale structure. Inorderto attempt answers to some topological questions, such as whether our universe is open or closed, whether it is orientable, and whether it is complete or possesses singularities, various theoretical approaches to global aspects of gravitational physics are presented here. As topological questions playa role in non-standard theories as weIl, it will be found that some of the lectures and seminar talks in this volume adopt the point of view of standard relativity, whereas others are based on different theories, such as Kaluza-Klein theories, bimetric theories, and supergravity. We have found it difficult to organize these papers into classes, say standard and non-standard theory, or models with and without singularities. One paper, by R. Reasenberg, is experimental. Its purpose was to give the theorists present an inkling of the opportunities, as weIl as the pitfalls, of experimental research in gravitational physics. Accordingly, we have arranged all contributions alphabetically, by ~first-named) author.

The Problem Book in Quantum Field Theory contains about 200 problems with solutions or hints that help students to improve their understanding and develop skills necessary for pursuing the subject. It deals with the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, classical field theory, canonical quantization of scalar, Dirac and electromagnetic fields, the processes in the lowest order of perturbation theory, renormalization and regularization. The solutions are presented in a systematic and complete manner. The material covered and the level of exposition make the book appropriate for graduate and undergraduate students in physics, as well as for teachers and researchers.

A canonical quantization approach to classical field theory, this text is suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. It is addressed to mathematicians interested in theoretical physics as well as theoretical physicists who use differential geometric methods in their modelling. The two-part treatment begins with an introduction to the elementary notions of differential geometry, the theory of Lie groups, and manifolds of maps. This overview prepares readers for the terminology used to describe globally defined fields in the second part. The introductory chapters mostly use a coordinate-free language, whereas the calculations in the later chapters employ a coordinate description, a method used somewhat more in applications to physics. Part II concerns a systematic development of a covariant Hamiltonian formulation of field theory, starting from the principle of stationary actions. Each chapter features an individual set of references, and the text concludes with an index and glossary of symbols.
