The goal of this book is to foster a basic understanding of factor analytic techniques so that readers can use them in their own research and critically evaluate their use by other researchers. Both the underlying theory and correct application are emphasized. The theory is presented through the mathematical basis of the most common factor analytic models and several methods used in factor analysis. On the application side, considerable attention is given to the extraction problem, the rotation problem, and the interpretation of factor analytic results. Hence, readers are given a background of understanding in the the theory underlying factor analysis and then taken through the steps in executing a proper analysis -- from the initial problem of design through choice of correlation coefficient, factor extraction, factor rotation, factor interpretation, and writing up results. This revised edition includes introductions to newer methods -- such as confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling -- that have revolutionized factor analysis in recent years. To help remove some of the mystery underlying these newer, more complex methods, the introductory examples utilize EQS and LISREL. Updated material relating to the validation of the Comrey Personality Scales also has been added. Finally, program disks for running factor analyses on either an IBM-compatible PC or a mainframe with FORTRAN capabilities are available. The intended audience for this volume includes talented but mathematically unsophisticated advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and research workers seeking to acquire a basic understanding of the principles supporting factor analysis. Disks are available in 5.25" and 3.5" formats for both mainframe programs written in Fortran and IBM PCs and compatibles running a math co-processor.

Emphasizing practical and theoretical aspects of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) rather than mathematics or formulas, Timothy A. Brown uses rich examples derived from the psychology, management, and sociology literatures to provide in-depth treatment of the concepts, procedures, pitfalls, and extensions of CFA methodology. Chock full of useful advice and tables that outline the procedures, the text shows readers how to conduct exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and understand similarities to and differences from CFA; formulate, program, and interpret CFA models using popular latent variable software packages such as LISREL, Mplus, Amos, EQS, and SAS/CALIS; and report results from a CFA study. Also covered are extensions of CFA to traditional IRT analysis, methods for determining necessary sample sizes, and new CFA modeling possibilities, including multilevel factor models and factor mixture models. Special features include a Web page offering data and program syntax files for many of the research examples so that readers can practice the procedures described in the book with real data. The Web page also includes links to additional CFA-related resources.

Praise for Active Alpha "Active alpha is the quest for every sophisticated investor. This book covers all of the key alpha sources currently mined by active managers, reduces the complexity of the subject, and helps the investor get started in the right direction." -Mark Anson, Chief Executive Officer, Hermes Pensions Management Ltd. "Long-held traditional methods for investing large portfolios are giving way to new processes that are designed to improve productivity and diversification. These changes find their locus in the sometimes overly mysterious world of absolute return strategies. In this book, Alan Dorsey demystifies that new world and provides a guiding pathway into the future of professional portfolio management. This is an important read for any investor who plans to succeed going forward." -Britt Harris, Chief Investment Officer, Teacher Retirement System of Texas "With great lucidity, Alan Dorsey's book, Active Alpha, fills an important void by identifying the relevant institutional features of this complex subject and by providing a unifying analytic framework for understanding and constructing portfolios of alternative assets. For anyone investing in the alternative class, from the new student to the experienced practitioner, Active Alpha is a necessary read. I am recommending it to everyone I know with such an interest, and it is destined to become a much thumbed reference on my shelf." -Steve Ross, Franco Modigliani Professor of Financial Economics, Sloan School, MIT

The publication of ""Precision Journalism"" in 1973 established a new trend in journalism--the use by reporters of social science research techniques to increase the depth and accuracy of major stories. That book was updated in 1978 but has been out print for several years. The basic principles are the same in the 1990's, but the technology has changed dramatically. ""The New Precision Journalism"" shows journalists and students of journalism how to use the new technology to analyze data and provide more precise information in easier-to-understand form. It covers the history of journalism in the scientific tradition, various elements and techniques of data analysis, the use of statistics, computers, surveys, and field experiments, database applications, how to do an election survey, and the politics of precision journalism. This is an important resource for working journalists and an indispensable text for all journalism majors.

Latent variable models comprise an important branch of multivariate analysis. In particular, they are used to create a framework for reducing data from large scale statistical enquiries to manageable proportions. Factor analysis, a key latent variable model, has been effectively applied to problems in sociology, geology, chemistry, and psychology. This book provides a latent-variable framework for psychometricians and statisticians in their specification and use of suitable research models. Several chapters explore fields where the data are categorical and the latent variables are metrical. (view table of contents)

This book is intended as an introduction to multiple-latent-variable models. Confirmatory factor analysis, path analysis, and structural equation modeling have come out of specialized niches of exploratory factor analysis and are making their bid to become basic research tools for social scientists, including sociologists; political scientists; social, educational, clinical, industrial, personality, and developmental psychologists; and marketing researchers. The author utilizes path diagrams to explain the underlying relationships in multiple-latent-variable models. He also provides an appendix on elementary matrix algebra. The book is not closely tied to a particular computer program or package; however, special attention is paid to two leaders in the field (LISREL and EQS). Users should have access to a latent-variable model-fitting program on the order of LISREL, EQS, CALIS, AMOS, Mx, RAMONA, or SEPATH, and an exploratory factor analysis package such as those in SPSS or SAS. In some places, a matrix manipulation facility such as that found in MINITAB, SAS, or SPSS would be useful.

Applied multivariate statistics has grown into a research area of almost unlimited potential in the natural sciences. The methods introduced in this book can successfully reduce masses of data to manageable and interpretable form. The authors give special attention to methods of robust estimation and the identification of atypical and influential observations. This textbook aims to introduce students of the natural sciences to the powerful technique of factor analysis and to provide them with the background necessary to be able to undertake analyses on their own. The authors explain new concepts in detail, and provide mathematical background where needed. (view table of contents)
