The narratives and analysis included in this book were written by and derived from teacher participants in a post-graduate course that the chief editor, Dr Fang, has taught at the National Institute of Education, Singapore. Narrative inquiry has been used in the course to help teachers and school leaders make meaning of their personal and professional growth and learning trajectory. Narratives give them their own voice, which leads to a deeper understanding of their work and lives and informs teacher educators, researchers, and policy makers on ways to better support their professional learning and development. More than being a mere summary of teacher narratives, the overviews of each of the six parts of the book, written by the editorial team after many rounds of reading and re-reading, tease out patterns to usher readers into the narratives contained in each part in more informative and reflective ways. The final part with two reflective essays and one research paper explores more systematically the narrative experiences of the course participants, while the epilogue records the author's own journey in developing a narrative inquiry pedagogy in teacher education. The book is expected to benefit future course participants and local teachers as a resource for professional development, and inform researchers and policymakers who are interested in understanding the lived experiences of teachers in Singapore and creating better teacher engagement in schools. Readership: Researchers, teacher educators, policy makers and the general public.

Two very different ethnic minority communities--the Naxi of the Lijiang area in northern Yunnan and the Tai (Dai) of Sipsong Panna (Xishuangbanna), along Yunnan's border with Burma and Laos--are featured in this comparative study of the implementation and reception of state minority education policy in the People's Republic of China. Based on field research and historical sources, Lessons in Being Chinese argues that state policy, which is intended to be applied uniformly across all minority regions, in fact is much more successful in some than in others. In Lijiang, elite members of the Naxi ethnic group (minzu) have a centuries-old connection with Chinese state educational systems as avenues to social mobility, and have continued this tradition under Communist rule. They participate enthusiastically in the present system, using education to gain official and professional positions. In contrast to the Lijiang area, Sipsong Panna functioned in many ways as a separate kingdom until 1950, with its own script and a separate educational system centered in Theravada Buddhist monasteries. Today, many Tai in that area still prefer monastic education for their sons, and most parents are indifferent to state education. This study finds that standardized, homogenizing state education is in itself incapable of instilling in students an identification with the Chinese state, ironically often increasing ethnic identity. Lessons in Being Chinese enhances our understanding of how state policy toward minorities works in many areas of life, and its conclusions can be extended well beyond the sphere of education. It will be of interest to both anthropologists and educators.

A volume in International Advances in Education: Global Initiatives for Equity and Social Justice Series Editors: Elinor L. Brown, University of Kentucky; Rhonda G. Craven, University of Western Sydney; and George McLean, Catholic Universities of America Democratizing educational access and building capacity in developing countries and amongst indigenous peoples in developed countries may be elusive but are hopeful goals. Many developing countries are striving to reengineer their incoherent education systems at a time when they are most vulnerable, particularly with susceptibility to natural disasters, political unrests, and economic instabilities (UNESCO, 2007). Similarly, indigenous peoples in developed countries are seeking more control over education as they consider the long‐term effects of educational policies that have been forced on them. Research on education and social change in developing countries has a long history (Glewwe, 2002; Hanushek, 1995; Sider, 2011). However, there is limited research on educational capacity‐building in developing countries such as Kenya, Honduras, Haiti, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Peru, China, and Thailand. Further, the educational frameworks by which Indigenous peoples (Māori, Canada's First Nations, and American Indian/Alaska Natives) have been educated have some significant similarities to those encountered in developing countries. The compilation of chapters illuminates research and collaborative initiatives between the authors and local leaders in developing countries' and Indigenous peoples in developed countries' efforts to solve the complexity of social inequities through educational access and quality learning. The authors draw on theoretical lens, knowledge bases, and strategies, and identify trends and developments to provide the scope of educational improvement in a globalization context (Brooks & Normore, 2010; Jean‐Marie, Normore & Brooks, 2009).

Western governments have a deep and unquestioning faith in the miraculous power of mass schooling to change society. In First and Third Worlds alike, the modern state pushes tirelessly to expand mass education and to strengthen the school's effect upon children. This book explores why, how and with what actual effects, politicians, bureaucrats and civic elite groups attempt to spread schooling to younger children, older adults and previously disenfranchised groups. The author argues that the school provides an institutional stage on which political actors signal various, sometimes contradictory, ideals, for example, a broadening membership in the polity, promises of mass opportunity in the wage sector and a deepening of a presumed commitment to the child's individual development. He advances a theory of the "fragile state" where Western political expectations and organizations are placed within pluralistic Third World settings. Using South Africa as an example, the author details the dilemmas faced by the central state, how it tries to influence local schools and what the results are within the classroom. This book is intended to be of interest to educational researchers and those concerned with sociology, politics and policy and development studies.

First published in 1984, this collection represents the combined contributions to an international conference held at the University of Bristol in April 1983. In assessing the complex relationship between education and development, it covers a wide range of countries in its appraisal and presents pictures both of optimism and pessimism. All, however, encourage the reader to re-examine long-held beliefs, and presents a new starting point for fresh discussion of this vital subject.
