Bioengineering is a broad-based engineering discipline that applies engineering principles and design to challenges in human health and medicine, dealing with bio-molecular and molecular processes, product design, sustainability and analysis of biological systems. Applications that benefit from bioengineering include medical devices, diagnostic equipment and biocompatible materials, amongst others. Computer Modeling in Bioengineering offers a comprehensive reference for a large number of bioengineering topics, presenting important computer modeling problems and solutions for research and medical practice. Starting with basic theory and fundamentals, the book progresses to more advanced methods and applications, allowing the reader to become familiar with different topics to the desired extent. It includes unique and original topics alongside classical computational modeling methods, and each application is structured to explain the physiological background, phenomena that are to be modeled, the computational methods used in the model, and solutions of typical cases. The accompanying software contains over 80 examples, enabling the reader to study a topic using the theory and examples, then run the software to solve the same, or similar examples, varying the model parameters within a given range in order to investigate the problem at greater depth. Tutorials also guide the user in further exploring the modeled problem; these features promote easier learning and will help lecturers with presentations. Computer Modeling in Bioengineering includes computational methods for modelling bones, tissues, muscles, cardiovascular components, cartilage, cells and cancer nanotechnology as well as many other applications. It bridges the gap between engineering, biology and medicine, and will appeal not only to bioengineering students, lecturers and researchers, but also medical students and clinical researchers.

Product Description: How do development and use of new technology relate? How can users contribute to innovation? This volume is the first to study these questions by following particular technologies over several product launches in detail. It examines the emergence of inventive ideas about future technology and uses, how these are developed into products and embedded in health care practices, and how the form and impact of these technologies then evolves through several rounds of design and deployment across different types of organizations...read more

Projections for advances in medical and biological technology will transform medical care and treatment. This in great part is due to the result of the interaction and collaboration between medical sciences and engineering. These advances will result in substantial progress in health care and in the quality of life of the population. Frequently however, the implications of technologies in terms of increasing recurrent costs, additional required support services, change in medical practice and training needs are underestimated. As a result, the widespread irrational use of te- nologies leads to a wastage of scarce resources and weakens health systems performance. To avoid such problems, a syst- atic and effective Health Technology System must be developed and introduced, requiring the support and commitment of decision makers of all levels of the health system. The MediTech2009 conference aims to provide a special opportunity for the Romanian professionals involved in basic - search, R&D, industry and medical applications to exchange their know-how and build up collaboration in one of the most human field of science and techniques. The conference is intended to be an international forum for researchers and practit- ners interested in the advance in, and applications of biomedical engineering to exchange the latest research results and ideas in the areas covered by the topics (and not only!). We believe the reader will find the proceedings an impressive document of progress to date in this rapidly changing field.

Medical devices are often complex and while there are differences in design, the principles of operation and more importantly the physiological and anatomical characteristics on which they operate are universal. Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Technology explains the uses and applications of medical technology and the principles of medical equipment management in order to familiarize students with their prospective work environment. The book describes the technological devices, various hardware, tools, and test equipment used in today’s healthcare arena. Photographs of representative equipment, the technical and physiological anatomical basis or their function, and where they are commonly found in hospitals are detailed for many biomedical devices, ranging from defibrillators to electrosurgery units. The text includes appendices that supply practical information, such as normal medical values, regulations concerning medical devices, and information on different educational tracks. Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Technology supplies an essential overview of clinical equipment and the devices that are used directly with patients in the course of their care for diagnostic or treatment purposes. The author’s practical approach and organization, detailing specific functions of everyday use, prepares students for situations they will encounter on the job. A solutions manual that contains problem sets is available upon adoption.
