Product Description: "[...]mankind. Parsifal is medieval, mystic, rapt, devout. Its ideals are those of celibacy and asceticism, the products of an age whose theories and practices as regards sex-relationships can have no echo in modern civilization. What more natural than that Wagner should fling himself, for mental and emotional relief, into a story throbbing with human love and marriage? Neither would some calm domestic drama serve, some story of the nursery or hearth-stone, dealing with the relations of one fond husband and father, one doting mother and child...read more

"Give me liberty, or give me death!" The subject of Children's Rights does not provoke much sentimentalism in this country, where, as somebody says, the present problem of the children is the painless extinction of their elders. I interviewed the man who washes my windows, the other morning, with the purpose of getting at the level of his mind in the matter. "Dennis," I said, as he was polishing the glass, "I am writing an article on the 'Rights of Children.' What do you think about it?" Dennis carried his forefinger to his head in search of an idea, for he is not accustomed to having his intelligence so violently assaulted, and after a moment's puzzled thought he said, "What do I think about it, mum? Why, I think we'd ought to give 'em to 'em. But Lor', mum, if we don't, they take 'em, so what's the odds?" And as he left the room I thought he looked pained that I should spin words and squander ink on such a topic.

By Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin (introduced by)

Paperback:

9780548769386 | Kessinger Pub Co, November 30, 2007, cover price $24.95

Kate Douglas Wiggin is best known for Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. A popular author of children's books, also opened the first free kindergarten in California -- the Silver Street Free Kindergarten, and worked there till the late 1880s. The Diary of a Goose Girl tells the story of a young woman who tires of civilization, and moves to a small village in England "in search of the strenuous life, and eager to wait, rather than to be waited upon." "I am very tired of people," she wrote, "and want to rest myself by living a while with things." "I rely upon you to keep an honorable distance yourselves, and not to divulge my place of retreat to others, especially to -- you know whom! Do not pursue me. I will never be taken alive!" Her story of her life on a farm, keeping hens, Belgian hares, and especially geese, and her portraits of those she abides with form the basis of a charming tale.
