The Deep Learning Academic Success Planner, by Dr. Karen Marie Walker (Director of the Academic Success Program at Southern Virginia University), is designed to help students better understand how knowledge is created in the brain, learn to utilize specific methods which assist the brain to deep learn, and become strong time/self managers. The format of the book exposes students to information about the brain and the development of knowledge.  Then specific skills are presented which help the student to deeply learn what they study: 1) creating a learning journal for each course; 2) active reading; 3) two column note taking with error-focused practice questions; 4) rolling review, error-focused practice questions, and question logs; 5) preparing for and taking exams. Strong time/self management is then taught through helping the student to:1) create a master schedule; 2) utilize monthly calendars to record all due dates and to break up large projects and exam study into smaller portions with assigned due dates; 3) use the integrated planning technique each evening to specifically plan the following day on daily planning forms.Monthly calendars and daily planning forms are provided from August 2012 through December 2013. A moveable "TODAY" marker is included with the book.  As students embrace and utilize the principles found in The Deep Learning Academic Success Planner their level of self management and academic performance is elevated.
