This general history of Russia covers the Kiev period through to the 1990s. Whilst examining the internal history of Russia, it pays particular attention to Russia's role in its wider European context and to its impact on world affairs. The central theme of this book is Russia's failure to adapt to the world ushered in by the French Revolution. In examining the reigns of three rulers, Alexander I, Nicholas I and Alexander II and the changes that took place under their rule, David Saunders finds multiple causes for Russia's failure to adapt. These include the personal failings of the Tsars themselves, an unwieldy bureaucracy, the potentially-explosive differences between Russians and the empire's ethnic minorities, and the government's chronic shortage of material resources. Themes covered include the political, diplomatic, intellectual, social and economic history of 19th century Russia. It is aimed at advanced sixth formers, undergraduates, general readership. It is a main text for courses in Imperial Russian history and can be used as supplementary reading for courses on the Russian Revolutions of the early 20th century, the general history of Europe in the 19th century and 19th century international relations.

Product Description: In early modern Europe the law developed as one of the few non-religious orderings of civil life. Its separation from religion was, however, never complete and we see the contest continued today not only in the campaigns of religious fundamentalists of the right, but also in the clains of critical intellectuals to reshape government institutions and the legal apparatus in accordance with moral principle - whether of indivudual autonomy or communitarian self-determination...read more

Dave Saunders’ spirited introduction to documentary covers its history, cultural context and development, and the approaches, controversies and functions pertaining to non-fiction filmmaking. Saunders examines the many methods by which documentary conveys meaning, whilst exploring its differing societal purposes. After a historical consideration of international documentary production, the author examines the impact of recent technological developments on the production, distribution and viewing of non-fiction. In addition, he explores the increasingly hazy distinctions between factual and dramatic formats, discussing ‘reality television’, the ‘docu-drama’, and less orthodox approaches including animated and fantastical representations of reality. Documentary encompasses a broad range of academic discourse around non-fiction filmmaking, introducing readers to the key filmmakers, major scholars, central debates and critical ideas relating to the form. This wide-ranging guidebook features global releases from the 1920s through to 2009, and includes films such as: Nanook of the North (1922) The Man with the Movie Camera (1929) Night Mail (1936) Night and Fog (1955) Primary (1960) Roger and Me (1989) Tarnation (2003) My Winnipeg (2006) Sicko (2007) Waltz With Bashir (2008) Say My Name (2009) Anvil: The Story of Anvil (2009)

The policing of pornography remains a subject of widespread controversy. On Pornography provides a history of this policing and an understanding of the current debate. The authors show that obscenity law should not be understood negatively as censorship but as part of the positive administration of a particular practice of sexuality. This book indicates that obscenity law is not, as liberals claim, a mistaken attempt to police moral ideas, but rather forms part of the legitimate governmental regulation of a problematic social conduct.
