Product Description: "Accessibility" is a term used in the literature of regional and transport research, and this text aims to show perspectives in the accessibility theme as well as on its links with trade and location behaviour. The spatio-temporal changes taking place in transportation and mobility patterns necessitate a complete rethinking of the accessibility concept, conceived as the core of cost-based theories and spatial interaction models...read more (view table of contents, read Amazon.com's description)

Product Description: This book argues that complexity theory offers new departures for (spatial-) economic modelling. It offers a broad overview of recent advances in non-linear dynamics (catastrophe theory, chaos theory, evolutionary theory and so forth) and illustrates the relevance of this new paradigm on the basis of several illustrations in the area of space-economy...read more (view table of contents, read Amazon.com's description)

9780444829313 | North-Holland, July 1, 1998, cover price $200.00 | About this edition: This book argues that complexity theory offers new departures for (spatial-) economic modelling.
This book presents a unified framework (based on spatial interaction models) that encapsulates most of the models developed so far for the analyses of spatial patterns of human activities at both a static and a dynamic level. The book shows how such models can be associated in a static analysis, with macro- and meso-oriented entropy theory and micro-oriented random utility theory. In a dynamic analysis such models can be seen as the result of an optimal trajectory through which a closed system approaches an equilibrium state, in both a deterministic and stochastic framework. However spatial interaction models can exhibit chaotic patterns under particular conditions, since they can be linked to both a logistic form (in a degenerate case) and interrelated logistics (in a general case). Finally, such models may serve to form a broad "envelope" incorporating many dynamic models currently used, which end up with logistic structures. The theoretical-methodological foundations are original, as various tools originating from different disciplines (e.g. economics, mathematics, physics, statistics, biology and natural sciences) are used to develop a unified framework.

The technological developments as well as urban future of an information age where the development of ICT sets the pace and options is explored in this book. The text examines the current state of daily travelling, and highlights the achievable impact and acceptability of transport policy measures. Freight transport is discussed from an industry viewpoint. In addition, the text presents various innovative approaches to rearranging current freight transport networks. Methods to evaluate the societal consensus related to the spatial development - linked to transport infrastructures - are also described. Still further, the text discuses methods for assessing spatial planning policies.
