Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, and literary critic. Poe is considered to be the inventor of detective fiction and he was one of the earliest and greatest practitioners of the short story. Legrand's servant then fears that his master is going insane. The story is one of the earliest examples of detective fiction.
