In many ways this book constitutes a criticism of historical method as a useful approach to the study of ancient Judaism. It is a book of essays which is meant to unfold around a single problem and play out the variations of a single theme. The first two chapters speak to one another. They state as clearly as I can what I conceive to be the promising lines of investigation, for the purposes of the study of religion and culture, into the Talmudic and cognate literature. The third chapter continues the essential polemic of the second. The fourth chapter deals with issues of system and order, and makes the main point. The following three chapters - fifth, sixth, and seventh - ask what we may learn about the world created by Mishnah. They deal in substance. The eighth and closing chapter is a very solemn effort to take into account the theology of what I have laid out for scholarly and hermeneutic purposes. My principal and recurring argument is that the world of Mishnah and the Talmud consists of a set of subsystems which, all together, form a whole and complete system. Judaism constitutes a way of viewing the world and of conducting life which fits together in all of its parts and constitutes a harmonious and cogent whole. My friend and former student, William Scott Green, University of Rochester, originally had the idea of bringing together these particular papers and saw them as a book before I did. It is to him that I owe the recognition of the underlying thread of argument in these essays, which I have written over the past two years. [From the Author's Introduction]
