The British scholar Harriet Martineau spent two years travelling throughout the United States before writing her three-volume commentary, Society in America, in 1837. Her lengthy journey began in New York in the autumn of 1834, less than sixty years after the birth of the United States, and she immersed herself in the politics, economics, civilisation and religions of the country before returning to England in the summer of 1836. Her travels took her to the nation's capital, where she enjoyed the hospitality of the president, witnessed Supreme Court proceedings and visited both houses of Congress. She also went to prisons, hospitals and mental institutions, literary and scientific foundations, factories, plantations and farms around the land; lived in farmhouses and log cabins; and travelled by horse, stagecoach and steamboat. This third volume examines American social organisation and religious institutions, with chapters on women, children, marriage, and religious beliefs and practices.

Part of a movement of European intellectuals, such as Alexis de Tocqueville, who came to observe and comment upon the American experiment with democracy, Harriet Martineau arrived in the United States in 1834 and stayed for almost 2 years. Her Retrospect of Western Travel, originally published in 1838, is the noted writer's thoughts on Jacksonian American society. Taken with American ideals of liberty and equality, this staunch activist and vocal thinker never hesitated to voice her thoughts on slavery and women's rights, and her views on abolition were received with much hostility. As one would expect from the feminist and philosopher, she was quite interested in American ways and takes account of many social events (such as weddings) to illustrate matters. Her travels took her through New England, the South, and some of the Mid-West, where she observed such institutions as schools, prisons, and asylums. Recognized for her early work in sociology, Martineau was determined to judge America by American rather than British standards. These two volumes make Martineau's full work available to scholars and interested readers. vol. 1 of 2

Product Description: One fine afternoon in April, 1770, there was a good deal of bustle in the neighbourhood of the village of Saint Menehould, in the province of Champagne, in France. Between 1832 and 1834, Harriet Martineau published a series of 24 short stories meant to illustrate the social and political problems arising from England's free-market economy: overpopulation, strife between workers and factory owners, the hardships of working-class life, and more. Though considered politically extreme by some, the series was wildly successful with readers, and went on to inform the later fiction of socially conscious authors including Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. It was, we see now, a banner moment in this history of Victorian literature, when politics began to inform fiction. Martineau's writings-often difficult to find in print and here presented in beautiful new editions-are essential reading for students of the 19th-century English novel. Volume V of Illustrations of Political Economy features the tales: • "The Charmed Sea" • "Berkeley the Banker, Part I" • "Berkeley the Banker, Part II" Pioneering English writer and feminist HARRIET MARTINEAU (1802-1876) has been called the first female sociologist and the first female journalist in England. She is also the author of Society in America (1837) and How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838).
