Six more short stories from Louis L'AmourIn the title story, Dutchman's Flat, it seemed a simple matter to the six men in the posse, catch the man who gunned down Johnny Webb in the Bon Ton. The squatter named Lock had shot him in the back and once they caught him, there wasn't going to be any trial. Lock would be summarily hung from the nearest tree. However, as the posse heads out into the desert in pursuit of the fugitive, it becomes only too clear that he knows the desert even better than they do and that from one vantage point or another he could shoot any one or all of them out of the saddle.

Now published for the first time in hard cover book form is A Man Called Trent as it originally appeared in West magazine. It is one of the finest Western stories L'Amour wrote. The setting of A Man Called Trent is New Mexico. The story opens to a nester, Dick Moffitt, dead, killed by King Bill Hale's riders. Sally Crane, sixteen and adopted by Moffitt, and Moffitt's fourteen-year-old son Jack witnessed Moffitt's murder from hiding, and then went to a cabin owned by a man named Trent for safety. Trent is actually Lance Kilkenny, a gunfighter hoping to leave behind his reputation. King Bill Hale has decided that he wants the graze in the high country for his cattle and to get it he must drive out the nesters. Cub Hale, King Bill's son, is a killer who has been running rough-shod ever since he became old enough to carry a gun. Kilkenny joins forces with the other nesters to defeat the powerful rancher.

Lance Kilkenny has the reputation of being the fastest gun in the West, that once there is a gunfight he leaves the district right after it is over, and that very little is known about him, even what he looks like. One day some time back Mort Davis saved Kilkenny's life after he was shot up and now Davis has sent out word that he needs Kilkenny's help. Mort has filed a claim on a water hole near Lost Creek in the Live Oak country. The district is dominated by two wealthy cattlemen, Webb Steele and Chet Lord, and both are at loggerheads, each one claiming for himself the water hole that David occupies. There is a mystery man who has a secret cabin in Apple Canon just above the saloon operated by Nina Riordan and her bodyguard, Jamie Brigo. It is this man who is responsible for stirring up the trouble between Steele and Lord, figuring they will kill each other off so he can claim both their ranches. There is also a mad-dog killer loose in the district and there have been a number of murders over the years. Kilkenny enters the fracas, meets and falls in love with Nita, and then works to get Steele and Lord to realise that they are pawns in a bigger game.
